BYU Roundup: Taggarts make dual commitment to Cougars

By Daily Herald - | Jun 4, 2023

BYU got two big commitments from the same family on Saturday.

The football team earned a pledge from former Corner Canyon linebacker Harrison Taggart, who spent last season at the University of Oregon before entering the transfer portal this spring. His younger sister, Utah prep track star Madelynne Taggart, also committed to become on Cougar on Saturday.

Harrison Taggart, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 216-pounds, was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2022. He was offered scholarships to Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, USC and Utah — but not BYU — before committing to the Ducks. Taggart played in just three games for Oregon last season.

At Corner Canyon, Taggart totaled 237 tackles in two seasons as a varsity starter. He has four years of eligibility remaining and joins a linebacker group for the Cougars that includes returning starters Max Tooley and Ben Bywater, as well as Utah State transfer A.J. Vongphachanh.

Taggart will join former Corner Canyon teammates Cole Hagen (QB), Micah Wilson (LB) and freshman Owen Borg (LB) on the BYU roster.

Fredette leads Team USA to silver medal

VIENNA, Austria – 2011 Naismith Award Winner Jimmer Fredette helped the United States win the silver medal at the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup on Sunday afternoon in Vienna, Austria.

Fredette led the 20-team tournament in scoring with 59 points (8.4/game) including a 13-point performance against Austria in the final game of pool play. He was named to the All-Tournament team as well.

In Sunday’s finale against the World’s No. 1, Serbia, Fredette finished with a game-high 10 points but saw his game-winning shot go in-and-out as the Serbians won the title for the fifth time in the past six championships. Even in the loss, Fredette becomes the first former Cougar to medal at a FIBA World Cup since Kresimir Cosic in 1978.

Earlier in the day the quartet Fredette, Canyon Berry, Dylan Travis and Kareem Maddox led the United States to their third championship appearance since the competition began in 2012 with a 21-17 victory over Brazil in the semifinals. Fredette drew a foul and made a free throw for the winning point.
