Tight team race highlights first day of 6A Boys Tennis

As expected, three teams from boys tennis power Region 4 handled their business on Day 1 of the state tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

Along with Corner Canyon (30 points), defending state champion American Fork (27) and Lone Peak (24), Region 1’s Farmington (27 points) are all near the top after Thursday’s action. Skyridge sits in fifth place with 22 points.

Corner Canyon has semifinalists in all five categories heading into Saturday’s final two rounds. Lone Peak and Farmington have four each and American Fork and Skyridge each have three, which should make for a close finish.

Defending 1st Singles state champion and No. 2 seed Caden Hasler of American Fork advanced to the semifinals with wins against Clearfield’s No. 15 Carson Johnson (6-0, 6-0) and Lone Peak’s No. 7 Davis Schulthies (6-1, 6-3). He’ll face Farmington’s Charles Frey, the No. 3 seed. The other 1st Singles semifinal features No. 4 seed Calvin Armstrong of Skyridge, who defeated No. 13 Boston McFarland of Fremont (6-0, 6-1) and No. 5 Davis Aubrey of Bingham in a 6-4, 7-6 (2) battle. Armstrong will see No. 1 seed Alex Fuchs of Corner Canyon on Saturday.

American Fork’s Griffin Karras of American Fork is the defending 2nd Singles champion and the No. 4 seed this year. He was upset by No. 5 Tate Squires of Lone Peak (6-3, 6-5) in the quarterfinals. Squires moves on to the semifinal round against No. 1 Aidan Rideout of Corner Canyon.

No. 2 seed Derek Larson of American Fork reached the semifinals in No. 3 Singles, taking care of No. 15 Nathaniel Logan of Herriman (6-0, 6-0) and No. 7 Everett Halverson of Davis (6-1, 6-4). He’ll play No. 3 seed Nathaniel Bullard of Farmington in the semifinals. Lone Peak’s Cache Garner, the No. 4 seed, defeated No. 13 Tyler Holgate of Copper Hills (6-0, 6-0) and No. 5 Treyton Brown of Bingham (6-2, 6-2) and will face No. 1 seed Cole Jenkins of Corner Canyon on Saturday.

In 1st Doubles, No. 2 seed Luke Rich and Sam Jensen of American Fork advanced to the semifinals with wins against No. 18 Tage Haacke and Jake Albaugh of Syracuse (6-0, 6-1) and No. 7 Jesse Taylor and Ben Smith of Lone Peak (6-0, 6-1). Rich and Jensen will face No. 3 seed Elijah Cuff and Max Ericksen of Skyridge in the semifinals. Cuff and Ericksen topped No. 14 Michael Fullmer and Connor Andersen of Taylorsville (6-1, 6-1) and No. 6 Brox Turley and Scott Finlinson of Davis (6-3, 6-1).

American Fork’s Colby Clinger and Adam Clarke are the No. 1 seed in 2nd Doubles and cruised to the semifinals with wins against No. 17 Jaden Tu and Raghav Krishna of West (6-0, 6-1) and No. 9 Payton Martinez and Luke Nilson of Weber (6-1, 6-2).

Clinger and Clarke will see a familiar foe in the semifinals in No. 5 seed Luke Miller and Dylan Fenton of Lone Peak. Miller and Fenton made their to the semifinals with victories over No. 12 Tyler Schow and Cameron Hansen of Syracuse (6-1, 6-2) and No. 4 Cole Durham and Jacob Williams of Davis (6-3, 6-4).

The Skyridge tandem of Cade Sperry and Andrew Allen, the No. 3 seed, advanced to the other semifinal in 2nd Doubles and will play No. 2 Nathan Kennedy and Josh Townsend of Corner Canyon. Sperry and Allen took care of No. 14 Kyle Gowen and Andrew Allen of Riverton (6-3, 6-1) and No. 6 Bronson Bowcut and Blake Geddes of Farmington (6-4, 6-3).
