The “dog” has been coming out early for Timpanogos at the state tournament.

The Timberwolves have jumped on their past two opponents, Orem and Salem Hills, early and the big starts have paid off with two big wins. On Tuesday, Timpanogos scored five runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 10-2 victory at BYU’s Miller Park.

That wins keeps the T-Wolves undefeated (2-0) in bracket play and confident in the way they are playing.

“We have fight,” said senior Tate MacGillivray, who was the winning pitcher and also 3 for 4 at the plate. “We’re not here just to have fun. We have that dog, like we want to win. We’re here to play.”

MacGillivray struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 top of the first, then led off the bottom of the inning with a single.

“When you have somebody on the mound that can throw zeros at the top of the inning and come up and the same guy leads off with really good at-bat, that’s just a great direction,” Timpanogos coach Kim Nelson observed.

For the second straight game, senior Tanner Morgan came up with bases loaded in the first inning and did damage. Morgan smacked a shot to deep right, driving in three runs and ending up at third with a triple.

“We’re going to have to bring him up in the lineup just to get him in there more,” MacGillivray said.

Leading 5-0 after one, MacGillivray was able to get into a good groove on the mound. He went 6 1/3 innings and struck out 11, giving up seven hits (all singles) and walking three.

“Tate is wiry kid and you look at him and he doesn’t look that strong, but he’s a strong kid,” Nelson said.  Throwing as hard in the seventh after 100 pitches into the game, that’s evidence right there.”

Timpanogos added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by Brighton Tate, McGillivray’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Luke Livingston, pushing its lead to 8-0.

Salem Hills put together four singles in the fifth to push across two runs from Nolan Miller’s RBI hit and a bases-loaded walk by Roper Kay. But at 8-2, that was as close as the Skyhawks would get. The T-Wolves plated two more runs in the sixth, Tate contributing another sac fly RBI and MacGillivray coming home on a passed ball for a 10-2 lead.

No. 2 seed Timpanogos (25-5) has won 13 of its past 14 games and will play again on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

“It’s a good time to do it,” Nelson said. “They’re just really good kids. We’ve had a really good year and we’re just trying to finish it out the way we should.”

No. 3 seed Salem Hills (23-6) will try to stay alive in the tournament with an elimination game on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against No. 6 Jordan.

6A Baseball

No. 1 Skyridge 6, No. 5 Mountain Ridge 5

The Falcons made a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning to advance in bracket play at UVU’s UCCU Ballpark.

Mountain Ridge scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and take a 5-2 lead, but Skyridge rallied and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 5-5 . With on out, Dalton Young ripped a single up the middle to score Chase Youngberg from third base for the game winner.

Due to two long rain delays, the game didn’t start until 9:35 p.m. and ended after midnight.

Skyridge (21-5) will play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and will take on the winner of an elimination game between Bingham and Mountain Ridge.

No. 7 American Fork 9, No. 12 Syracuse 3

C.J. Mascaro led off the game with a home run and the Cavemen staked themselves to an early 5-0 lead in a win against upstart Syracuse on Tuesday.

American Fork (17-11) moves on in bracket play with a 2-0 record and will play on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at UVU’s UCCU Ballpark.

Syracuse (16-15) will face No. 6 Riverton in an elimination game on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

No. 1 Skyridge was in action late Tuesday night. The tournament was stopped twice for lightning and rain delays, so the Falcons game vs. No. 5 Mountain Ridge was not complete at press time.

No. 6 Riverton 4, No. 15 Westlake 3

Westlake’s surprising run in the 6A tournament came to an end on Tuesday at UVU’s UCCU Ballpark in a close loss to Region 3 champion Riverton in bracket play.

Ryken Daniels drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth to allow the Thunder to tie the game at 3-3, but the Silverwolves pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Westlake got the tying run at first with two outs in the top of the seventh on a Riverton fielding error, but Mason Hartle flew out to end the game.

Four Riverton pitchers held Westlake (12-19) to just five hits.

The Silverwolves (19-6) move on to a Wednesday elimination game against the loser of Tuesday’s American Fork-Syracuse game.

Westlake, which finished 1-15 in Region 4 play and was the No. 15 seed, defeated No. 19 Roy 2-0 in the best-of-three Regional round, then upset No. 2 Cyprus 2-0 in the best-of-three Super Regionals.

No. 13 Bingham 10, No. 8 Pleasant Grove 3

The Vikings were eliminated by the Miners on Tuesday at UVU’s UCCU Ballpark on the strength of a huge second inning. Bingham scored six runs on just two hits in the frame, but the two hits were very big: A grand slam by Dylan Frank and solo home run by Kam Beck. PG also walked three and hit another to give the Miners plenty of baserunners.

The Vikings (15-13) finally broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the seventh and scored three runs, including a two-run double from Tua Wolfgramm. But the deficit was simply too large to make up.

Bingham (15-14) stays alive and will play the American Fork-Syracuse loser in an elimination game on Wednesday.

5A Baseball

No. 4 Lehi 5, No. 17 Woods Cross 0

Jackson Brousseau pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Lehi past Woods Cross in a late Tuesday bracket round matchup.

Brousseau struck out five and finished off his complete game victory without a walk, facing just 24 batters in seven innings. Mays Madsen was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Pioneers and Tysen Elswood was 2 for 2.

Lehi (22-6) will continue bracket play on Wednesday at 7 p.m., playing the winner of an elimination game between Viewmont and Woods Cross. A victory there would propel the Pioneers into the best-of-three championship series beginning Friday.

No. 6 Jordan 7, No. 7 Orem 2

Orem has been one of the hottest teams in the state over the past month, winning 16 of 17 coming into Monday’s bracket play. But the Tigers lost to No. 2 Timpanogos 13-4 on Monday and were eliminated by the Beetdiggers on Tuesday.

Orem committed four errors on Tuesday, giving Jordan plenty of extra scoring chances. Luke Kimmel went five innings for the Tigers and scattered six hits, allowing six runs but only three of them earned.

Jordan (20-9) moves on to an elimination game on Wednesday against the loser of the Timpanogos-Salem Hills matchup.

Merrick Bostock was 2 for 4 for Orem (18-11), including a double, and drove in two runs.
