The 2023 5A-6A Girls Volleyball State Tournament at Utah Valley’s UCCU Center has been what the kids would call “super competitive.”

Thursday saw 11 of the 32 matches going to five sets, playing havoc with the tournament schedule. For comparison, last year’s 5A-6A Day 1 at the UCCU Center had just one five-set match of the 32 played.

In late 6A quarterfinal action on Thursday, No. 5 Corner Canyon surprised No. 4 Pleasant Grove with a sweep (25-22, 29-27, 26-24) to advance to the semifinals. No. 2 Lone Peak, the defending 6A champions, rolled past No. 7 Herriman 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-22) to move forward to Saturday’s semifinals as well where the Knights will play No. 3 Bingham. The Miners are coached by former Lone Peak head man Reed Carlson.

In late Thursday consolation play, No. 12 Westlake moved past No. 13 Fremont with a reverse sweep (25-27, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-13) while No. 15 American Fork bowed out of the tournament with a five-set loss to No. 10 Syracuse (22-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-13, 15-13).

In 6A consolation on Friday, No. 4 Pleasant Grove rebounded from a tough loss in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-10, 25-16) victory against No. 8 Mountain Ridge. In the 5th-7th place match vs. No. 6 Weber, the Vikings came out on top in a sweep (25-20, 25-22, 25-14) to take 5th place and finish with a 26-6 overall record.

No. 12 Westlake completed its tournament play on Friday as well. The Thunder topped No. 9 Farmington 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-20) and took on No. 14 Davis in the 6th-8th place match. The Darts won the match 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-22) and earned 6th place.

In 5A consolation on Friday, No. 5 Salem Hills topped No. 9 Viewmont 3-1 (25-13, 26-24, 24-26, 25-12) to advance to the 5th-7th place match. The Skyhawks were swept by No. 7 Skyline (25-15, 25-22, 25-20) to finish in 7th place.

No. 17 Cedar Valley swept No. 20 Springville (25-20, 25-14, 25-11) on Friday and moved on to the 6th-8th place match against No. 3 Hunter. The Aviators survived a another five-set match (19-25, 24-26, 25-17, 25-16, 15-6) to earn a 6th-place finish.

Saturday’s semifinals are set for 10 a.m. (5A) and 11:30 a.m. (6A) at the UCCU Center, with the finals scheduled for 4 p.m. (5A) and 6:30 p.m. (6A).
