UVU players celebrate with Faith Webber after she scored a goal during the game against USC in Los Angeles on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023.

Faith Webber scored a pair of goals for her fifth brace of the season to help lead the Utah Valley women’s soccer team to a 4-1 win over WAC foe UTRGV on Saturday night at Clyde Field.

Utah Valley improves to 6-3-4 overall and 3-0-1 in WAC play. The Wolverines are on a three-game win streak and hold a seven-match unbeaten streak. UTRGV falls to 3-7-2 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.

“You’ve got to be happy with the win and scoring four goals,” said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. “I did think that we lacked some quality in the final third. There were a lot more opportunities that we should have finished but credit to UTRGV. I thought they had a great game plan and made it difficult on us. We just weren’t as sharp as we are capable of being. With all that said, congrats to our team for a good weekend with the six points. We’re excited about where we’re at.”

Utah Valley out-shot UTRGV 34-6 on the night, including 21-2 shots on goal advantage. Webber and Stainbrook led the Wolverines with nine shots, followed by Hladek with four and Brady with three. The 34 shots ties the team for the ninth most shots in a single game in UVU history and marks the second-most shots in a game in the Chris Lemay era.

Webber scored her 13th and 14th goals of the season, tying her own UVU single season record of 14 goals set last season. She now has five multi-goal games this season. Webber ranks in the top five nationally in scoring.

Utah Valley now heads out on the road for a pair of WAC matches at Tarleton State and Abilene Christian next week. The Wolverines will take on Tarleton State on Oct. 5 before traveling to Abilene for a matchup on Oct. 8. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

UVU women’s cross country wins Paul Short Run

The 24th-ranked Utah Valley University women’s cross country team notched its third straight team title to start the 2023 season, winning the Paul Short Run on Saturday at Lehigh University.

Morgan Nokes led the way with a fourth-place finish while Ari Trimble was sixth; both runners have also notched individual wins so far this season. Nokes finished the 6K Gold Race in 20:25.3 while Trimble’s time was 20:28.8.

“That was the goal today, to finish first. We’re getting better and better and if we can stay healthy and keep our names in the rankings, we’ll potentially be able to qualify for the NCAA Championships again,” said UVU head coach Scott Houle. “Morgan ran a really smart race and I think she’s going to be a consistent one or two for us the whole year. Ari did really great work in front of the pack, and we’re really excited to see how she has continued to improve. Having five girls in the top 25 was pretty awesome to do.”

Up next for Utah Valley will be the Color Country Invitational at Southern Utah in Cedar City on Saturday, Oct. 7.

After SJSU scored within the opening five minutes, the Wolverines settled down and went on to out-shoot the Spartans 13-9 on the afternoon. The goalkeepers put on a showcase, as both Allen and SJSU’s David Sweeney picked up four crucial saves.

The Wolverines will return to Utah this week for an Old Hammer Rivalry showdown against the Utah Tech Trailblazers in St. George. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT and the match will be streamed live on WAC International.

BYU men’s tennis doubles team beats Utah duo to win regional title

Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs won the ITA Mountain Regional doubles title Saturday, defeating No. 55 Geronimo Busleiman and Berk Bugarikj of Utah in the main draw final to punctuate a highly successful weekend for BYU men’s tennis.

The ranked victory came on a third set super tiebreaker (first to 10 points) where Thayne and Fuchs powered to a 7-1 lead before closing it out at 10-4. The match score ended at 5-7, 6-3 [10-4] to earn auto bids to the ITA National Fall Championships on Nov. 1-5. Entering the weekend, Utah’s duo was the top doubles team in the tournament.

“In the final round, Zach and I lost a close first set, but then got an early break in the second set and were able to serve it out and played a great tiebreaker,” said Thayne. “Zach and I have great chemistry. When one of us gets a little down, we’re really good at keeping the other guy fired up and positive.”

On a quick turnaround, the Cougars are back in action as Thayne and Fuchs will compete at the ITA All-American Championships beginning Monday, Oct. 2.

Cougar swimming shines at Intermountain Shootout

Both the BYU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won dual matches at the Intermountain Shootout in Grand Junction, Colo., on Saturday.

“Our athletes brought incredible energy to this meet,” said BYU swimming head coach Shari Skabelund. “I am pleased with the progress they’re making and momentum they’re carrying into the season after a solid summer of training.”

The BYU men won both of their dual matchups, topping Air Force 316.50-90.50 and beating Colorado Mesa 253.50-146.50. BYU women’s swim and dive overcame Air Force 229-181 and CSU Pueblo by a score of 343-57. Host Colorado Mesa, however, edged the Cougar women 208-202.

After a week off, Cougar swim and dive returns to action with a dual meet at TCU on Oct. 13 in Fort Worth, Texas.
