Just minutes after Timpanogos handled Salem Hills 35-14 on Friday, Timberwolves senior quarterback Chase Riggs and offensive coordinator Devin McCann were accepting congratulations and deflecting the praise back at each other.
“He makes all the play calls,” Riggs said.
“They aren’t really play calls,” McCann countered. “They’re suggestions. You think I’m kidding but I’m not.”
However it works, the Timpanogos offense is one of the fastest and most efficient in the state, week in and week out, and has been since McCann brought the no-huddle, fast-paced attack to the school.
“It’s one of those things that once you take a peak behind the curtain, you go, ‘Is that really it?'” T-Wolves head coach Austin Heaps said. “There are so many moving parts, but when you break it down to each one of its components, it seems very simple.”
It helps to have Riggs as the trigger man. Now in his third year as a starter, Riggs understands how the offense works: He’s thrown 53 touchdown passes in his career and despite missing the first three games of the season has helped lead Timpanogos to more than 38 points per game.
“This is the funnest offense I’ve ever ran or played in,” Riggs said. “It’s an RPO offense. Coach (McCann) gives me a suggestion and when I get to the line I can either call a pass or run, whatever I want. It’s nice having a big tight end (Josh Graf), a big running back (Easton Bretzing), fast and quick receivers (Luke Livingston, Dash McCann, Cache McCann and Gabe Graf) and a big offensive line. We can do whatever we want, whenever we want. It’s really awesome.”
Riggs finished with two touchdown passes against Salem Hills — both to Livingston, who also threw a scoring pass in the second quarter.
Timpanogos scored on its first drive, overcoming 20 yards in penalties. Riggs tossed a 29-yard pass to Gabe Graf on third and 20 to get into the red zone. A few moments later, Livingston made a fantastic one-handed catch of a Riggs pass for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
The T-Wolves took the ball quickly down the field on its next drive, a combination of Riggs’ pinpoint passing and Bretzing’s powerful running. Bretzing bashed over from three yards out for a score and a 14-0 advantage with 2:50 to play in the first quarter.
“This offense has a lot of checks and balances,” Heaps said. “It takes a new quarterback from Christmas meetings all the way through fall camp just to start understanding it. So you have a player like Chase Riggs, who’s been running it for three years. Coach McCann puts a ton on his shoulders and he knows he can handle it. Obviously you can see when it’s clicking, it’s scary.”
Timpanogos put up another score in the second quarter, this drive ending in a big play. On third and 16, Livingston connected with Gabe Graf for a first down that turned into much more. Two Salem Hills defenders collided, which cleared a path for Graf to sprint 49 yards to paydirt and a 21-0 halftime lead for the T-Wolves.
Salem Hills changed quarterbacks in the second half and Jedi Nelson led the Skyhawks on a solid drive that reached the Timpanogos 28. On fourth and 2, Brighton Tate and Ma’atoe Moe swarmed a Salem Hills running play to turn the ball over on downs.
With 4:48 to play in the third quarter, Riggs rolled to his right and fired a perfect strike to Livingston at the pylon for a 13-yard touchdown and a 28-0 lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, the T-Wolves rode the power running of Jaden “Bowling Ball” Robinson to reach the Salem Hills 9-yard line, where Riggs scampered over for a score and a 35-0 advantage with 10:23 to play.
Nelson led the Skyhawks to two scoring drives against the Timpanogos reserves to account for the final score.
The T-Wolves honored 26 seniors and their families before and after the game.
“These seniors, this is not their first rodeo,” Heaps said. “These kids understand the responsibilities of good leadership. It’s just about the next game. There’s no one that we overlook. There is no looking on in two weeks or the playoffs or this or that. I haven’t heard anyone wearing a uniform right now talk about the seedings, or where we’re going. This week it was just ‘Salem, Salem, Salem.’ Now this game is over, it’s going to be ‘Spanish, Spanish, Spanish.’ That’s just the job, to focus on the next opponent.”
Timpanogos (7-2 overall, 4-1 Region 8) was No. 7 in 4A RPI heading into Friday’s game. The T-Wolves will finish the regular season at Spanish Fork next Friday.
No. 8 Salem Hills (6-3, 4-2 Region 8), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, will end regular-season play with a non-league game at Bear River.
