5A Girls Tennis: Timpview finishes fourth, Olympus wins back-to-back team title
Defending 5A champion Olympus won two state titles and finished second in both doubles disciplines on Saturday to claim its second straight girls tennis team championship at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
The Titans scored 60 points to earn the No. 1 spot, with Woods Cross in second with 45 points, Skyline in third with 32 and Timpview in fourth with 27.
No. 1 seed Emi Dowdell of Olympus won the 2nd Singles crown with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against No. 2 Rachel Heimburger of Skyline and in 3rd Singles, No. 1 seed Elizabeth Carter topped No. 6 Elle Dykstra of Skyline 6-0, 6-1.
Timpview, which was tied for second going into the final day, didn’t advance any of its competitors out of the semifinals.
In 2nd Singles, No. 3 Mylie Cravens battled with Heimburger before falling 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2. Kendall Woods, the No. 2 seed in 3rd Singles, fell to Dykstra 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals.
The No. 5 Timpview 1st Doubles duo of Jane Collins and Addison Burt dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to eventual champions Sage Bergeson and Ruby Robbins of Woods Cross in the semifinals.
In 2nd Doubles, Timpview’s No. 3 seed team of Elizabeth Bednar and Lauren Austin bowed out in the semifinals to No. 2 Alexandra Rawlings and Wilhelmina Hoggan of Olympus.
The only other local semifinalist was Maple Mountain’s Maiah Crandall, the No. 5 seed in 3rd Singles. She finished the season with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Carter, the eventual state champion and No. 1 seed.
