When the No. 9 BYU women’s volleyball team is on a roll in a rocking Smith Fieldhouse, the Cougars are pretty hard to stop.

Just ask Iowa State.

BYU blasted the Cyclones 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) on Thursday in front of 3,525 fans, dominating the Big 12 visitors in just about every way possible. After winning the first two sets decisively, BYU took ISU’s best effort in Set 3 and still pulled away for the seven-point victory and the sweep.

“I really like the way we came out,” Cougar coach Heather Olmstead said. “We came out pretty assertive, pretty fired up to play and excited to be at home against a good Iowa State team. I loved our offense. I thought Whitney (Bower) set a great match, probably one of her best in location and consistency. That allowed us to have some seams in the block. I thought it was a whole, complete team game and everybody helped.”

Erin Livingston blasted 15 kills on 24 swings with just two errors to lead the Cougars (17-3 overall, 6-2 Big 12).

“Erin went off,” Olmstead said. “I love the way Erin was so assertive at the net.”

Livingston’s finished with a season-high hitting percentage of .542.

“Our crowd makes it so electric in here,” Livingston said. “I always try tell Whitney, ‘Hey, I’m here, I got it.’ She just sets me up perfectly. I just wanted to hit high and hard and use my toolbox, different shots. Whitney was keeping the blocks in the middle, so I was able to have some seams.”

Bower was again at the top of her game, leading BYU to a .370 hitting percentage for the match with 27 assists, eight digs and four kills. Whitney McEwen-Llarenas had six block assists (the Cougars had 10 blocks to ISU’s 6) and freshman Mia Lee continued her strong play with five kills and just one error (.444) along with four block assists. Kate Prior also had a nice match with six kills and four block assists.

The score was tied at 8-all in Set 1 after Morgan Brandt aced a serve for Iowa State, but the Cougars went on an 11-0 run with Aria McComber at the service line. McComber started the blitz with an ace and everything broke BYU’s way. McEwan-Llarenas and Bower combined on a pair of tandem blocks and Livingston had a pair of kills as the Cougar lead ballooned to 19-8. Lee’s kill got BYU to set point and Prior went off the block for the 25-14 victory, Iowa State’s worst set loss of the season.

Livingston had six kills in Set 1 and the Cougars hit a sizzling .417 while holding the Cyclones to .222.

BYU made its move in Set 2 at the same point (8-8), getting a terrific dig from McComber that led to a Livingston kill for a 10-8 lead. Prior had a kill, then teamed up with Lee for back-to-back blocks and a 17-11 advantage. Bower won a joust at the net for set point and Lee tooled her shot off the block for the 25-17 victory.

Iowa State kept Set 3 close for a little longer than the previous two sets and took a 13-12 lead on a kill from Nayeli Gonzalez. Elyse Stowell checked in and gave BYU a big lift with a kill and then teamed up with McEwen-Llarenas for a block. McEwen-Llarenas and Prior stonewalled back-to-back Cyclone attacks, followed by another Stowell kill for a 5-0 run for the Cougars and a 17-13 advantage. A Bower dump brought BYU to 23-17, then Prior fired off an attack for match point. Iowa State committed a net violation and the Cougars won 25-18 for the sweep.

“I like that we’re figuring out who we are and we can win with different players playing well,” Olmstead said. “Last week it was Whitney Llarenas that went off for 17 kills. We have multiple players that can help us win and we’re looking for that. I don’t know if it’s a perfect match where we’re clicking and playing well, but I think tonight was pretty close.”

The Cyclones (13-5, 4-3), just outside the Top 25 this week, were led by 10 kills from Maya Duckworth but hit just .089 offensively.

The same two teams will meet in the Fieldhouse on Friday. Concluding a four-match home stand, the Cougars will hit the road again next week for two matches at Kansas State Oct. 26-27.
