Valley Top 5: Big football showdowns coming up as league play moves forward

Each week, Daily Herald sports writers Jared Lloyd and Darnell Dickson rank the top five teams in the Utah Valley in football, girls soccer and girls volleyball:

FOOTBALL

1. Skyridge (5-0)

Falcons are potent, averaging 44.4 points per game.

2. Lehi (5-0)

Biggest test of the season Friday at undefeated American Fork.

3. American Fork (5-0)

Defense stonewalled Bingham in 28-0 victory.

4. Pleasant Grove (5-0)

Vikings host Lone Peak, haven’t beaten Knights since 2012.

5. Timpview (3-2)

T-Birds shut down Springville’s running game in 17-0 win.

GIRLS SOCCER

1. Lone Peak (11-1)

If the Knights make it through this week, they will be tough to stop the rest of the way.

2. American Fork (7-3)

The Cavemen would love to avenge their earlier loss to Lone Peak.

3. Timpview (8-3)

The Thunderbirds dropped another tough 3-2 defeat, this time to Springville.

4. Mountain View (7-3)

The Bruin defense has been strong, only allowing seven goals all season.

5. Skyridge (7-4)

The Falcons better not be looking past PG to the big showdown with Lone Peak on Thursday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

1. Lone Peak (6-0)

New setters Sam Pope and Nevaeh Ten doing good work.

2. Skyridge (14-0)

6-foot-1 Falcons sophomore Kylie Buttars with 115 kills (3.1 per set).

3. Pleasant Grove (10-3)

Vikings went 4-1 at Utah Valley Invitational with tough loss to Bingham.

4. Maple Mountain (4-2)

Matchup with Salem Hills on Tuesday always a good one.

5. Orem (5-2)

Tigers opened Region 8 play with 3-1 victory vs. Payson.
