Five True Facts about … Arkansas Football

One

Arkansas has been playing college football since 1894, competing in the Southwest Conference from 1915 to 1991 and the Southeastern Conference since 1992.

Two

BYU has one player on its roster from Arkansas: Junior defensive tackle Caden Haws.

Three

The Arkansas mascot was originally the Cardinals but in 1909, head coach Hugo Bezdek told reporters that his team played like a “wild band of Razorback hogs.” The student body eventually voted to change the mascot.

Four

The “Woo Pig Sooie” or “Calling of the Hogs” became a tradition and the official school cheer in 1920’s when farmers rushing out to meet the team bus returning from an away game called the hogs as a greeting.

Five

Arkansas claims one national title, won in 1964. It was actually named national champion in 1977 by the Rothman (FACT) poll after defeating No. 2 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl and finishing 11-1, but does not claim this title.
