6A Girls Tennis: 3-time defending champ Skyridge sitting pretty at state tournament

The Skyridge girls tennis team is trending for a fourth straight state team title after dominating play on Thursday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

The Falcons lead the team race with a perfect 30 points heading into the final day of competition after advancing to the semifinals in all three singles disciplines and both doubles categories. Lone Peak and Layton each have 22 points and both American Fork and Corner Canyon are close behind with 19 point apiece.

In 1st Singles, Pleasant Grove sophomore Tally Johnston, the No. 5 seed, will take on top seed Tia Christopulos and junior Bella Lewis of Skyridge, the No. 2 seed, will face Farmington’s Brighton Johnson (No. 3) in the semifinal round. Johnston defeated American Fork freshman and No. 4 Sophia Leavitt 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Lewis topped No. 10 senior Addison Hansen of Riverton 6-2, 6-0.

Lewis finished second last season in 1st Singles after beating Christopulos in the semifinals.

One of the 2nd Singles semifinals features two Utah Valley competitors as No. 2 Skyridge junior Kaia Sperry battles No. 3 Lone Peak sophomore Eden Conley. Sperry blanked Esmae King of Davis 6-0, 6-0 and Conley handled Isabelle Leak of Mountain Ridge 6-4, 6-1. The other semifinal pits No. 1 Tana Christopulos of Layton, last year’s No. 3 singles champ, against No. 4 Molly George of Corner Canyon.

In 3rd Singles, No. 4 American Fork sophomore Olivia Bishop advanced to the semifinals against No. 1 seed Victoria Cooksey of Layton. Bishop defeated No. 5 Ava Dunyon of Davis 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Cooksey was the 2nd singles champion last season.

The other 3rd Singles semifinals has No. 2 junior Naomi Johnson of Skyridge against No. 3 freshman Ava Jensen of Lone Peak. Johnson beast No. 7 Sophia Packer of Mountain Ridge 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Jensen took care of No. 6 Emaline Roberts of Bingham 6-0, 6-2.

Skyridge duo Kylee Sperry and and Andi Armstrong, the No. 1 seed in 1st Doubles, bullied their way to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against No. 8 Brooklyn Young and Sara Davis of Westlake. Sperry and Armstrong will face No. 5 Katelyn Ord and Olivia Muir of Corner Canyon.

Sperry teamed with former Falcon Savannah Johnson to win the 1st Doubles title last season.

The other 1st Doubles semifinals has a pair of Region 3 teams facing off. No. 2 Mia Black and Ruby Bautista of Lone Peak will take on No. 11 Ava Stevens and Lucy Caldwell of Pleasant Grove.

Black and Bautista got past No. 7 Katie Smith and Madison Mabey of Bingham 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Stevens and Caldwell upset No. 3 Liberty Hardy and Olivia Tingey of American Fork 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to earn their way into the semifinals.

In 2nd Doubles, No. 1 seed Ava Ericksen and Sophia Bleak of Skyridge will play No. 5 Emma Cowie and Lindsy Knight of American Fork in one of the semifinals. Ericksen and Bleak topped Rachel Burke and Elizabeth Williams of Davis 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Cowie and Knight came from behind to beast No. 4 Meg Christensen and Joanna Clark of Pleasant Grove 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

The semifinals will commence Saturday, 9 a.m. at Liberty Park.
