Brace by Hladek leads UVU women’s soccer to come-from-behind win at Detroit Mercy
Ruby Hladek recorded a brace with two goals, and Mia Owens headed in the game-winner to lead the Utah Valley University women’s soccer team to a 5-2 road win over Detroit Mercy on Sunday night at Titan Field in Detroit, Michigan.
“Throughout the season, we will find ourselves in various situations, and each one is a learning opportunity that we add to our arsenal,” said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. “Tonight’s match was one of those. Facing adversity — being down a goal twice — our team showed resilience by coming back both times. Our ball movement and creativity were exceptional. It was a big day for Ruby, and we’re really happy for her. It was also awesome to get Leah some playing time in her home state.”
Detroit Mercy took a quick 1-0 lead in just the third minute off the foot of Amelia Streberger, but Utah Valley scored a quick equalizer in the fifth minute as Hladek found the back of the net off an assist from Manthy Brady to tie the game, 1-1.
The Titans regained the lead in the 26th minute after the Wolverines were called for a handball in the box, awarding Detroit Mercy a penalty kick, which Abbey Lodato converted to give the Titans a 2-1 advantage.
Faith Webber scored her third goal of the season in the 47th minute, heading the ball across the goal line to tie the game at 2-2. Webber’s goal was assisted by both Taylor Nelson and Hladek.
Mia Owens then headed the ball into the back of the net off a cross from Nelson to give UVU a lead it would not relinquish, 3-2. Owens’ goal in the 61st minute proved to be the game-winner.
Sadie Beardall added a fourth goal for UVU in the 76th minute, assisted by both Hladek and Ashley Garcia.
Hladek secured her brace in the 79th minute, converting a penalty kick to give the Wolverines a commanding 5-2 lead.
Utah Valley outshot Detroit Mercy 30-6 on the night, including a 16-3 advantage in shots on frame. After slightly outshooting the Titans 10-6 in the first half, Utah Valley dominated the second half with a 20-0 shot advantage.
Webber led the Wolverines with eight shots, including five on goal. Hladek had seven shots, with three on frame, while Brady and Beardall each recorded four shots.
CJ Graham played the first half in goal for the Wolverines, while Michigan native Leah Wolf took over in the second half, keeping a clean sheet.
Utah Valley will remain on the road as the team travels to Orlando, Florida, to take on UCF on Thursday night.
