UVU women’s golf wins first tournament in school history

ST. GEORGE — The Utah Valley University women’s golf team shot a three-round 39-over-par 903 (304-294-305) to claim the 2024 Utah Tech Trailblazer Invitational team championship on Tuesday at Green Spring Golf Course in St. George, Utah.

The Utah Tech Trailblazer Invitational title is just the fourth team championship in UVU women’s golf history and its first team title since it won the Wildcat Invitational in 2014. The Wolverines shot a final-round 17-over-par 305 to claim the championship with a three-round score of 39-over-par 903 (304-294-305).

The team title marks the first-ever 54-hole outright team championship in program history.

“Words cannot express my gratitude for this team,” said Utah Valley head coach Juli Erekson. “They stayed within themselves and continued to stay composed. I am so proud of all of them for being patient until the end. Chloe, Abbey, and Caylyn all had a solid top ten finishes to help carry the team to its win. This was a great weekend for the girls to see they can do it!”

The Wolverines finished seven strokes ahead of second place Cal State Northridge (+46) and 11 strokes ahead of third place finishers Gonzaga (+50) and UC Irvine (+50). Host Utah Tech (+67) finished fifth, followed by Southern Utah (+71) in sixth, Western Michigan (+77) seventh, Eastern Washington (+100) eighth, and Idaho State (+118) ninth.

Abbey Porter carded a 2-over-par 74 in the final round to finish alone in fifth place with a three-round score of 7-over-par 223 (76-73-74). Porter recorded one birdie with 15 pars in her final round.

Chloe Jang shot a 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth with a three-round 8-over-par 224 (75-75-74). Jang had four birdies with 10 pars in her final round.

Caylyn Ponich shot a 5-over-par 77 to finish eighth on the individual leaderboard with a three-round score of 9-over-par 225 (77-71-77). Ponich tallied two birdies and nine pars in the final round.

Millie Terrion shot a final-round 8-over-par 80 to finish tied for 13th at 15-over-par 231 (76-75-80). Terrion had one front-nine birdie with 11 pars on Tuesday.

Pati Uluave carded a 12-over-par 84 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 36th with a three-round score of 28-over-par 244 (85-75-84). Uluave had 11 pars in her final round.

Annabelle Millard and Maria Ortiz each played as individuals at the tournament. Millard shot a final-round 9-over-par 81 to finish in 46th with a 39-over-par 255 (89-85-81). Ortiz carded a 13-over-par 85 in the final round on Tuesday to finish in 50th at 44-over-par 260 (84-91-85).

Utah Valley will continue spring play at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational, March 7-9, at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George.
