One thing BYU fans are loving about new men’s basketball coach Kevin Young: He keeps topping himself as a recruiter.

Just one day after inking one of Europe’s top young players in Egor Demin, Young got another gem to sign on the dotted line for the 2024-25 season.

Kanon Catchings, an ESPN Top 100 athlete and a previous Purdue commit, has signed a financial aid agreement to play for the Cougars.

“We are so excited to welcome Kanon to BYU. He’s a great young man,” Young said. “Kanon’s a big-time talent who brings great size, shooting, and athleticism to Provo. He has basketball in his blood, and we are equally as excited to welcome his family. His defensive ability is as impressive as his offensive talent. We can’t wait to get Kanon on campus and get to work with our players and staff. We look forward to helping him develop and thrive in our program.”

Catchings becomes the third member of the ESPN 100 to sign with the Cougars, joining Elijah Crawford and Brody Kozlowski. The consensus four-star recruit is the highest recruit in program history according to 247Sports after playing last season with Overtime Elite including a stint under current BYU assistant coach Tim Fanning.

During his time with OTE’s Cold Hearts, the 6-foot-9 forward averaged a team-high 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in the regular season, shooting 54.5 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from three and 72.5 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double figures 11 times including a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double where he went 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

The native of Brownsburg, Indiana was even better in the postseason averaging 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds. He scored in double figures in all five playoff games including a pair of double-doubles.

Prior to becoming the first player from the state of Indiana to play at Overtime Elite, Catchings averaged 17.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a junior at Brownsburg High School. He scored a tournament-record 39 points, 25 of those coming in the first half, in a win over Kokomo High School and the No. 4-ranked recruit in the country, Flory Bidunga.

This latest signing means BYU has one more scholarship available for the 2024-25 roster, which now features returners Dawson Baker, Dallin Hall, Richie Saunders, Trey Stewart, Trevin Knell, Fousseyni Traore, Townsend Tripple and Jared McGregor along with newcomers Catchings, Demin, Crawford, Kozlowski, Keba Keita and Mawot Mag.

Starting at $4.32/week.
