College Roundup: BYU’s Gibb goes off in Canada victory against Dominican Republic

Canada’s game against the Dominican Republic at the FIBA AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile, was a straight blowout.

BYU’s Delaney Gibb made the most of her minutes.

Gibb scored 20 points in just over 20 minutes to lead the Canadians to an 82-46 rout on Wednesday, giving Team Canada a 3-1 record in the group round.

Gibb was 8 of 16 from the floor, including 4 of 6 from the 3-point line, and also contributed six rebounds and an assist. The sophomore-to-be exploded for 15 of her 20 points in the second quarter, helping Canada extend its lead to 47-19 at halftime.

Gibb, getting her first experience with the senior Canada team, has scored 38 points in the four AmeriCup games.

The win qualifies the Canadians for the quarterfinal round, which begins on Friday.

UVU wrestling pushes attendance numbers

Utah Valley wrestling ranked No. 18 in the National Wrestling Media Association’s annual attendance report, moving up seven spots from its No. 25 ranking in 2024.

Under first-year head coach Adam Hall, the Wolverines broke their single-match attendance record when 5,053 fans packed the UCCU Center last November for the home-opening dual against No. 3 Oklahoma State. The matchup was among the highest-attended duals in the nation during the regular season.

Utah Valley averaged more than 1,000 fans across its five other home duals. Four of those were held inside Lockhart Arena, where the Wolverines posted wins over No. 23 Oregon State, California Baptist, and Air Force during a three-dual home win streak.

Iowa led the nation in average attendance with 13,640 fans per dual across seven home meets. Rounding out the top five were Penn State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Rutgers.

Barraclough, Forbes earns national academic honors

tah Valley University wrestlers Terrell Barraclough and Jack Forbes have been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team in the College At-Large Division, an honor that recognizes both athletic and academic excellence.

“This recognition reflects the strong academic commitment of both Jack and Terrell, as well as the values of our program,” UVU head coach Adam Hall said. “We appreciate the acknowledgment of their hard work in the classroom. We’re hopeful their efforts will be recognized at the national level as well.”

Barraclough adds the honor to an already impressive list of accolades, including Big 12 Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and NWCA Scholar All-American. He is currently enrolled in UVU’s MBA program through the Woodbury School of Business after earning his undergraduate degree from Penn State University.

On the mat, Barraclough had one of the most successful seasons in program history, finishing with a 32-4 record and becoming the sixth All-American in school history. The Kaysville, Utah, native recorded 10 wins over ranked opponents, including five against top-10 foes and four against top-five competitors.

Forbes also earned national attention this season, appearing in the rankings for the first time in his career after upsetting No. 23 Harley Andrews of Nebraska in a 5-4 decision in Lincoln. It marked his first career win over a ranked opponent.

A chemistry major, Forbes also earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors, was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team, and received special recognition for maintaining a perfect GPA in UVU’s chemistry program.

This marks the first time either student-athlete has received CSC Academic All-District honors. To be eligible, nominees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 and compete in at least 70% of team scoring events. Schools are limited in the number of nominations they can submit across at-large sports, which at UVU include men’s and women’s golf and wrestling.
