Timpanogos Coach Kim Nelson addresses his team

The toughest thing for Timpanogos baseball Coach Kim Nelson to figure out during his team’s 18-0 romp over Pine View on Friday was a task he more than welcomed.

Due to the course of the game, along with it being the final game that will be played on Timpanogos home field this season, Nelson wanted to get each and every player into the lineup. Always mindful of giving his players as much recognition as possible, Nelson endeavored to figure it out.

“It’s a lot tougher than I think some people would think and was as much hard work to figure it out as anything else, but I was more than happy to do it,” Nelson said. “As a coach it’s a joy to see all the kids make contributions and get in there. All of them work so hard and deserve to have all the recognition they can get, even if it’s just a little bit. That’s what I love to do. That’s what’s fun.”

Of course paving the way for Nelson to empty his bench was an offensive onslaught that began in earnest in the top of the first inning, went over the top in the third and then finished off strong in the fifth.

Jackson Sotelo led off the barrage in the first, slugging an RBI double, which was followed up by Jace Hunter bringing two runners home, including Sotelo, with another double. All together four runners touched home plate in the first for an early 4-0 lead.

The third inning saw twice as many round the bases as the Timberwolves built an overwhelming 13-0 lead. Just about everyone in the lineup contributed RBIs in the third, but it was a 3-RBI double hit by Canyon Clegg that highlighted all of it.

Clegg and Hunter both finished the game with three RBI a piece, with Collin Morgan, Dylan Partridge and Sotelo each adding two, respectively.

“We struggled to score yesterday. Pine View had a good pitcher going, so we felt like we needed to jump on them right away in that first inning, and we did,” Nelson said. “It just sort of set us off after that with just about everyone getting involved.”

Indeed Timpanogos won a tight 2-0 contest over the visiting Panthers the day prior in the best-of-three Super Regional Round of the 4A State Championships. With the win Timpanogos moves on to final bracket play which will take place at Utah Tech University in St. George.

“I wasn’t really sure we had the experience or if we’d be able to score enough runs, but we’ve done really well with both aspects,” Nelson said regarding his team’s chances at a 4A state championship. “I think we lead the state in runs scored, so that tells you how much I know, I guess. Our players have really hit the ball well all year.”

But Friday wasn’t about the stats, it was all about the players, which included two of his grandsons, Brigham Louder and Crew Peterson.

“It was just a lot of fun,” Nelson said. “It was fun for me. It was fun for our family and I guess I could get a couple of more years of this.”
