The girls state soccer championships begin this week with Lone Peak looking for the three peat this season in the 6A competition while  American Heritage will look to defend its 2A state title when play begins this Thursday.

The Knights (15-1-1) enter championship play in prime form, not having dropped a match since late August, earning themselves the No. 1 seed in the process. The Patriots (10-6), meanwhile, earned a high No. 3 seed, which certainly should provide a good path to repeat their championship run from a year ago.

Here’s a look at the 6A, 5A, 4A and 2A tournaments

Class 6A

Led by leading scorer and BYU commit Kate Fuller, Lone Peak has looked as dominant as ever this season, rolling past tough Region 3 competition without a single loss on its ledger in region play. The Knights lone loss came back on August 28 with a shootout loss to Layton.

Since then the Knights have recovered nicely, although they did just scrape by both Corner Canyon and American Fork late in the season, needing overtime to get by the Cavemen 2-1.

As for American Fork, it will bring to the tournament a young and exciting team that looks to make its mark under the tutelage of first-year Coach Tara Warner. The Cavemen won it all in the boys competition last spring and the girls will aim to make a similar run when they kick off versus Layton on Tuesday.

Lehi, meanwhile, has proven competitive in most matches played this season, led by super sophomore Lillie Watson, who leads the team in the goals scored this season.

Class 5A

Utah County owns the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds entering the 5A tournament and could subsequently arrive as the last team standing when competition begins on Thursday.

Spanish Fork is Utah County’s top-seeded team, earning itself the No. 3 seed due to a late season surge that has second-year Coach Harry Roberts-Hunt liking his team’s chances.

“We’re at the point where we have the belief that we can truly compete and beat anyone. So why not just win the whole thing?,” Roberts-Hunt said. “I really can’t see why we can’t. We’ve surpassed all of our expectations, so far, and reaching other goals won’t be easy, but I really, really like this team’s work and buy-in in what’s just my second season coaching here.”

Both Springville and Timpview equaled the Dons final season win-loss record of 13-5 and were granted the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively, as a result. All three of them battled fiercely throughout Region 7 competition and could easily see one another late in state championship play.

Class 4A

Upstart Mountain View enters the 4A competition as the No. 9 seed, which was the highest designation granted a Utah County team. But the Bruins will enter the state championships confident on the heels of winning eight straight games to end the regular season.

“We’re young, but we don’t lack intensity or time on the ball. I love where our team is at today,” said Mountain View Coach Spencer Steed. “We need to make sure we keep improving, but I love the attitude and the progress we’ve shown throughout the year and I really believe the sky is the limit here for Mountain View for this year and in the future.”

Utah County’s next highest seed is Timpanogos, which will enter competition as the No. 16 ranked team a year after coming within just one win of a state championship.

Class 2A

American Heritage looks to defend its state championship, but will have to get by some tough competition as the No. 3 seed, namely rival Maeser Prep, which defeated the Patriots 2-0 back in late September. The Lions, meanwhile, were granted the No. 4 seed with both teams looking to make noise come tournament time.

“We lost a lot of seniors off of last year’s team, so we’re playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores,” said Maeser Coach Dustin Simmons following his team’s win over American heritage. “So we’re looking to build and wins like this fuels that fire. So we know what it takes now to beat one of the top teams in the state and hopefully we keep improving.”
