BYU Roundup: Women’s volleyball moves to 3-0, women’s soccer takes down Auburn

No. 19 BYU women’s volleyball team defeated High Point in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 27-25) at the Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday evening, moving on to a 3-0 record while claiming the doTERRA Classic title.

Claire Little Chambers led all players with 15 kills on a .483 hitting percentage. Sophia Callahan and Brielle Kemavor also led the BYU offense, collecting seven kills each. Kemavor finished with a match-high seven blocks. Mia Lee added five, while Little Chambers and Callahan each had four.

BYU totaled 41 kills to High Point’s 20, along with four aces while holding the Panthers to just one. HPU out-blocked the Cougars, 13-12, but BYU out-dug the Panthers, 43-33.

The Cougars went 3-0 in the deTERRA Classic, also defeating Farleigh Dickinson 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) and Central Michigan 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21).

Little Chambers was honored as the tournament MVP. She was joined by Suli Davis and Emma Barbero on the all-tournament team. Central Michigan’s Taylor Cripe and Maggie Uhwat, High Point’s Ella Grace Holloway and FDU’s Alessia Zampieri were also recognized.

A 3-0 run by the Cougars to gain a 12-8 advantage would steer BYU towards a consistent lead, heading all the way into High Point’s first timeout call at 19-14. An ace by Emma Barbero combined with two Callahan kills forced High Point to burn its second timeout, with BYU leading 23-16.

Davis’ fifth kill of the night would put a bow on set one, with BYU winning 25-17. The Cougars collected 13 kills on an efficient .400 hitting percentage characterized by Alex Bower’s 11 assists as well as two BYU aces.

In Set 2, the Cougars went on a 5-0 run in the midst of two timeout calls by High Point, extending their lead to 14-9, with the Panthers hitting in the negative. A back-to-back block and kill by Little Chambers would give BYU an eight-point lead, its largest of the set at the time, 19-11.

A 3-0 run consisting of two Anna Blamires kills, the first of her young career, and a Little Chambers kill guided BYU to a 25-13 win in set two, securing a 2-0 lead for the Cougars.

BYU managed a 5-1 lead in the top of Set 3, including two Kemavor kills. High Point slowly crawled back, going on a 3-0 run to then even the score at 16-16 and forcing BYU to call its first timeout of the night. The Cougars survived through a long rally, taking back a two-point lead 21-19 for High Point to call timeout. After another tie at 21-21, BYU followed with a Little Chambers kill and Kemavor block to go up 23-21.  The Cougars would finish with a Little Chambers kill and double block by Lee and Bower to conclude the match 27-25, securing a 3-0 sweep.

BYU will host the BYU Nike Invitational next week, leading with a match against Northern Colorado on Thursday in the Smith Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. MDT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.

Cougars shut out Auburn

No. 11 BYU women’s soccer (3-0-1, 0-0 Big 12) shut out the visiting Auburn Tigers 2-0 in front of 4,282 fans at South Field Friday night.

“Presley [Freeman] has had a fantastic career for us so far,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “Excited for her first goal tonight. She’s come in, she’s worked hard and she’s very talented. She’s such a high-end player.”

The Cougars outshot the Tigers 15-12 and now have a 2-1 all-time record against Auburn.

In the scoreless opening half, BYU slightly led in time of possession, having the ball 53 percent of the time while Auburn had the advantage in shots leading 9-6. Both teams had one shot on goal.

In the 57th minute BYU got on the board when a cross from Walbruch went to an Auburn player who, in an effort to clear the ball past the goal line, got an own goal. BYU added to its lead in the 79th minute when sophomore defender Presley Freeman scored her first collegiate goal after her long ball to the box went over the keeper.

The Cougars outshot the Tigers 9-3 and held Auburn without a shot on goal in the second half to seal their third win of the season.
