College Roundup: No. 16 BYU women’s volleyball wins at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah — Outside hitters Suli Davis and Claire Little Chambers combined for 26 kills as No. 16 BYU women’s volleyball swept Utah State (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Thursday night.
The Cougars (11-0, 0-0 Big 12) overcame an eight-point deficit in the final frame to complete their sixth-consecutive sweep on the year. BYU outhit Utah State .316 to .258, recording six more kills than the Aggies.
Also posting five more aces and three less service errors than USU, BYU out-blocked Utah State, seven to five as well. Davis finished with a match-high 15 kills on a .379 clip, and was two digs shy of her second-straight double-double.
Little Chambers added 11 kills of her own, while Brielle Kemavor had eight, hitting .500, to go along with five blocks. Abby Hoybjerg and Sophia Callahan both posted four. Alex Bower tallied 37 assists, while Emma Barbero had nine digs and three aces, both match highs.
The Cougars dominated the first two sets but Utah State went on a 6-0 run to get out to a lead in Set 3 and held a 15-7 advantage. Callahan snapped a 7-0 Aggie span with a kill, and BYU got back on track with a trio of Kemavor-Davis double blocks and two Hannah Billeter aces as the Cougars reeled off eight straight, all with Billeter serving, to tie the set at 15, forcing both USU timeouts in the process.
BYU began to pull away on a series of Kemavor quick hitters, making way for a Barbero ace, three Little Chambers kills and a Davis kill from the back row that brought about match point. Davis wrapped things up two plays later with a cross court kill, 25-22.
BYU will make the trip down University Parkway to face Utah Valley on Saturday at 3 p.m. MDT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
No. 11 BYU women’s soccer scorched by Sun Devils
TEMPE, Ariz. — No. 10 BYU women’s soccer fell flat to open Big 12 play, falling behind 2-0 at Arizona State and eventually dropping a 2-1 decision on Thursday.
The Sun Devils (8-0-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12) scored in the ninth minute on a goal by Cameron Valladares for a quick 1-0 lead and BYU never really recovered. The Cougars, playing without starting center backs Izzi Stratton and Avery Frischknecht, were outshot by Arizona State 16-15, with the home team getting seven shots on goal compared to BYU’s four. The Cougars had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks but couldn’t convert that into goals. The physical match counted 21 fouls, 12 against BYU (5-2-1, 0-1).
Arizona State led 1-0 at halftime and extended that advantage to 2-0 in the 50th minute. After taking the ball away from the Cougars at center field, ASU sent a through ball to Addison Baltodano, who took one touch and scored a left-footed shot.
With just five minutes remaining in the match, BYU defender Presley Freeman collected a ball from Mika Krommenhoek inside the box and took a shot with the outside of her foot which deflected off an ASU defender into the net, lessening the lead to 2-1. Despite the late-game offensive surge by the Cougars, they were unable to find the equalizer.
BYU (5-2-1, 0-1) returns to South Field for a pair of Big 12 matchups next week, taking on West Virginia on Wednesday and Cincinnati on Saturday. Both games will kick off at 7 p.m. MT with streaming on ESPN+.
UVU women’s volleyball gets road win at Weber State
OGDEN, Utah – Bella Wooden recorded a career-high 13 blocks, tied for the third most in a single match in program history, as Utah Valley defeated Weber State 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23) on Thursday night at Swenson Gym.
Sami Blackett posted a season-high 21 kills, while Avery Page finished with 16. Weber State (8-3) was led by Ashley Gneiting, who had 15 kills. The Wolverines rallied from an early deficit in the first set to take a 13-9 lead after three straight points on block assists, with Wooden and Olivia Gloeckner teaming up for two and Wooden combining with Blackett for the third. Page kept the Wildcat defense off balance with a mix of swings and tips, finishing with six kills on eight swings in the opening frame.
The Wolverines won the opening set 25-21, hitting .375 with four team blocks. Weber State outhit UVU to take the second set 25-23 and tied the match at 1-1. With Lani Matavao serving, the Wolverines went on an 8-1 run in Set 3, highlighted by an ace and a WSU misplay, turning a 10-10 tie into a 13-10 lead. Tied again at 21 after a Weber State rally, Blackett put UVU ahead before back-to-back blocks from Wooden and Steliyana Chakarova pushed the Wolverines to set point. UVU closed out the frame on a WSU attack error.
The teams traded points to a 15-15 tie in the fourth set before UVU’s front row came up big late. Wooden tied the set at 22 with a kill, then combined with Alyvia Jaffa and freshman Lauren Feiler on a series of blocks to reach match point. Wooden sealed the win with her final kill.
Page finished with her seventh double-double of the season (16 kills, 16 digs), the 22nd of her career.
Utah Valley (4-7) closes nonconference play Saturday against No. 16 BYU at 3 p.m. MT inside the UCCU Center. The match will stream on ESPN+ with live stats at UVUstats.com.
Utah State tops UVU women’s soccer 2-0
LOGAN, Utah — Utah State scored twice after halftime to hand Utah Valley a 2-0 setback on Thursday afternoon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field in UVU’s nonconference finale. The Wolverines conclude nonconference play at 4-4-1, while the Aggies move to 3-3-2.
Summer Diamond broke the deadlock in the 58th minute and Hadli Barrera added an insurance goal in the 77th for Utah State. The Aggies outshot UVU 16-9 and held a 7-1 edge in shots on goal.
Faith Webber registered a match-high five shots for Utah Valley, and Ruby Hladek added three attempts with one on target. UVU finished with an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Leah Wolf made five saves.
Utah Valley now turns to Western Athletic Conference play, opening a three-match homestand on Thursday against Tarleton State at 7 p.m. at UCCU Stadium.
