Skyridge senior Ryder Gentry chose a mighty fine time to throw down the first in-game dunk of his career on Friday.
Early in the fourth quarter, with Skyridge looking to extend its lead, Gentry rose through the lane and slammed one home right in the face of a Lone Peak defender during the Falcon’s 64-50 win. The Skyridge bench, and indeed just about everyone in attendance, rose to their feet to raucously celebrate the play, and for good reason.
“I barely even dunk it in practice, so I guess it was just the adrenaline,” Gentry said. “It was the fire with it being against Lone Peak and for all the seniors on senior night.”
Gentry and his senior teammates put to to the Knights all night long, as it were.
Gentry led all scorers with 21 points, with fellow senior Carson Mosteller adding 20 and Zach Gagon 12. Mosteller was especially effective from behind the 3-point arc, where his four made treys set the tone early, gave the Falcons an early lead, and left Lone Peak in comeback mode for most of the game’s 32 minutes of play.
But as is often the case with Skyridge, Friday’s win was mostly about the defense.
Hampered by the loss of star forward Crew Fotheringham to injury toward the end of the first half, the Knights struggled to get anything going offensively. Of course Skyridge had a lot to do with it, applying the same level of defense that causes most teams played to struggle to put up more than 50 points.
“The kids have really bought into the defensive side of the ball and my assistants do a great job breaking down defense,” said Skyridge coach Jeff Gardner. “If you apply tough, hard-nosed defense throughout any game, then you’re going to be in it on most occasions, and our kids buy into that and you saw the results of that tonight.”
None of it was easy, however.
Fraught by the loss of Fotheringham, among other factors, the Knights ushered in some extra physical play which resulted in some flagrant fouls called and both teams on the brink of taking some swings at one another. But the Falcons didn’t back down, took the blows and eventually won going away in what was one of the more physically-intense regular season high school basketball games you’ll see.
“Coach Ingle is just a huge competitor,” Gardner said of Lone Peak coach Izzy Ingle, “It’s why he’s been such a successful coach and he had his players showing no quit out there tonight. So yeah, it got pretty physical out there, but that’s just the competitive fire Ingle and his team had after losing one of their best guys. Fortunately we responded well to it.”
As mentioned, Skyridge set the tone early with its shutdown defense and deft defensive pressure and rotations that combined to give it a 34-22 lead at the half. the second half saw the intensity ratcheted up considerably, and the Falcons responded to all of it, slowly building the lead up until Gentry’s thunderous dunk took things to another level.
“I’ve never seen him dunk it in a game before, so that was a shock, and the emotion we all felt because of it was truly awesome to experience,” Gardner said. “Ryder is one of our great seniors and what I love about all our seniors is that each of every one of them are totally unselfish. They don’t care about playing time, stats, and they just have a great chemistry as friends and players. When you have a team like that, you’re going to be a tough team to beat.”
“We’re so close, we hang out all the time, and it resonates on the floor,” Gentry added. “We play together, and I’m just happy that the dunk may have helped us get even more feisty and able to finish Lone Peak off tonight. I’m so happy it all came together tonight and we were able to win this on our home floor.”
With the win Skyridge improves to 14-7 overall and 2-4 in Region 3 play. Lone Peak falls to 13-10 overall and 3-4 in Region 3 play with the loss.
