As Skyridge boys lacrosse players commenced a wild celebration that included throwing equipment high in the air, dogpiling in front of their goal, and exuberant shouts and hugs all around, a sense of stunned amazement could be seen in their joyful expressions.

Had it really happened?

Yes, Falcons, it had. That 12-11 score on the scoreboard was not a dream.

Skyridge did something that no team had ever accomplished in Utah high school boys lacrosse: Defeated Corner Canyon in a state playoff game.

The top-seeded Chargers came in having won all five possible titles since the first official season of the sport in 2021 (2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), sporting a perfect 17-0 record.

The No. 2-seeded Falcons, on the other hand, had never even made it to the title game.

“We were playing house money the whole time,” Skyridge head coach Bart Butterfield said. “That had been the message, that there was no pressure on us. They were trying to maintain perfection, and we just have to go out there and land one good jab.”

It didn’t look like that was going to happen in the early going in Saturday’s 6A championship at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman as Corner Canyon immediately seized control, scoring the first four goals and blanking the Falcons into the second period.

“We knew they had a great offense,” Skyridge senior Dylan Forsgren said.  “They have some of the top producers in the state, but we just knew that we had to possess the ball and we had to get the wide open shots. We knew when the shot was obvious it would be the right one, so we worked it around until we got the obvious shot, and slowly chipped away at it.”

To give the underdogs a chance to rally, the Falcons needed their defense to up their game — and Skyridge sophomore keeper Luke Adams (18 saves) and his defenders did just that.

“It would be pretty tough to ignore the goalie that absolutely stood on his head,” Butterfield said. “He was fantastic.”

Adams said he tried to stay grounded and not be too hard on himself when Corner Canyon scored, focusing instead on the team concepts.

“Throughout the entire game I kept wondering if I was doing good enough,” Adams said. “But I think keeping a positive and level mindset is the attitude that you need to keep throughout a game like this. I think a bigger thing is just kind of having a mind like a goldfish and forgetting what already happened, which is what my dad always says. I was just focusing on talking with my defense. That’s all that really matters in the moment is just everything else around me.”

The Falcons finally got on the board in what most would considered an extremely unlikely attack, as junior defensive mid Eric Parry spied Charger keeper attempting to sneak over to steal a pass and launched a shot into the open net from midfield.

Butterfield, however, said it was an opening Skyridge felt like it would see from Corner Canyon.

“We practiced it a lot, knowing we were going to see it this season, and practice makes perfect,” he said.

After Falcon goals by freshmen Kaiden Hobbs and Tamanuitoi Johnson, Parry would add a second long shot to narrow the Charger lead to 5-4.

Corner Canyon added a pair of goals to again pull ahead early in the third quarter, but that was when Forsgren caught fire for Skyridge.

“I was hard on myself in the first half,” Forsgren said. “I had zero goals first half and I missed that last buzzer-beater at halftime. In the locker room, I knew if we were going to win, I had to put some shots in. We came out and my team got me open. They got me the open looks and I was fortunate enough to can them.”

Forsgren scored three goals in succession to erase the Charger advantage, then — after both teams had gone back and forth — added a fourth at the 5:24 mark of the fourth quarter to give Skyridge its first lead.

It only took a minute for Corner Canyon to bounce back and tie the score, however, setting up a thrilling conclusion where every pressure-packet moment heightened the drama.

“I’m sure I’m going to find more gray hairs tonight,” Butterfield said. “We only lost two games and I never really felt like they learned how to play from behind this year, so it was just a lot of poise and composure on their part. I’m so proud of them.”

With under three minutes to play, though, the Falcons got the look they wanted with Johnson finding an opening.

“That one was special,” Johnson said. “I just have to credit (), drawing the entire team over to him, then moving it down to (Forsgren) and getting me the wide open shot. I’ve practiced that shot thousands of times in my backyard. Seeing it go in was the best feeling I’ve ever had. It was amazing to realize that I did it for my boys, for all the seniors.”

Johnson rifled in the low angle shot from the side to give Skyridge the lead, on that Forsgren called “electric.”

“That freshman, he is a one of a kind,” the Falcon senior said. “I knew when he got the ball and they gave him space, I knew he was going to can that because he’s been canning shots like that all year. We are so lucky to have a guy like that, a freshman who could show up in big moments. It was amazing.”

But there was still 2:29 on the clock and the Chargers were going to do everything they could to respond.

“It was so stressful after we scored that goal,” Forsgren said. “I told the whole team we needed to possess the ball. We were lucky enough to have a great defense locked in the last two minutes, making great saves and getting us the ball back.”

The Corner Canyon supporters erupted when it appeared the Chargers had tied the game again with a point-blank goal with 1:22 left — only for it to be waved off due to a violation.

Skyridge also had a penalty in the final minute, but managed to knock the ball away and take possession. Corner Canyon tried desperately to get it back but the Falcons refused to turn it over as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

When the horn sounded, it was finally time for Skyridge to celebrate by dogpiling on Adams.

“I was kind of scared,” Adams said with a grin. “I was getting laid on top of there for a little while, so I was worried about my ribs. But it was surreal, to say the least.”

Forsgren said that he had dreamed of a championship game like that for four years and so to actually experience it was indescribable.

“I was bawling,” he said. “There were so many emotions. That was the best feeling in the world. This was the best day ever.”

Adams said he feels the victory was a testament to the effort the Falcons put in throughout the year.

“I think it means that our hard work paid off,” Adams said. “It’s all the practices where everyone shows up early and stays late. I think that finally paid off. All that matters is that hard work pays off. If we all have one goal, there’s nothing that cannot be achieved.”

Forsgren said that reaching the pinnacle with this Skyridge team was even more special because of how close the squad is.

“We are a family,” Forsgren said. “We just have brotherhood. All these guys are my brothers, and I know that they’ll show up for me if I show up for them. It’s amazing to have a team like that where everyone is so close.”
