The turf monster got the better of Beckham Curtis in his opening touch of the second half Friday against Springville. On his second touch, he turned into a monster on the turf.

Orem’s senior running back shook off a stumble for negative yards and churned out a 68-yard touchdown run fueled by a pair of cutbacks.

The play proved to be the game winner for the Tigers, who turned a 14-14 halftime tie against Springville into a 42-14 win in the region opener for both teams in Springville.

“We got our steps mixed up, me and the quarterback were fumbling around a little bit,” Curtis said of the miscue. “But we got it figured out.

“Just a perfect block from our O-Line,” he added about his touchdown run. “And then our receivers the whole week just practicing that same block, that cutback, like it’s all drawn up perfectly.”

The two plays perhaps encapsulated how the two halves went for the star-studded Tigers, who boast a roster of some of the state’s top talent and were fresh off a one possession loss to nationally ranked Mater Dei.

In a rematch of last year’s 5A state title game, Orem (2-2) took a shot from Springville (2-2), which scored the game’s first touchdown and evened the score at 14 late in the first half. It was all Tigers in the second half, though, as they added four touchdowns and shut down the Red Devils’ offense. 

“When you play Springville, you’re in for a physical battle, and they showed that just like they show it every year,” Orem coach Andy Stokes said. “It’s going to be a tough team. They’re going to be a playoff team, and it’s possible we see them again.

“I think we got better this week, and that’s all we ask the kids each week, the kids each week. Let’s get better, and they showed up. They got a lot better today.” 

The Tigers’ ground game powered the offense. Supported by a talented offensive line, Curtis ran for 236 yards and three touchdowns, and sophomore Hayden Jarvis went for two touchdowns of 36 and 82 yards. 

The six-touchdown effort was a season best to this point. Stokes said it takes a while for an offense to gel and that he saw progression Friday. 

“There’s a lot of new guys starting on this team with a new offense and a new head coach,” he said. “So it took some time, but I think they’re coming along.” 

The ground game also worked some for Springville — at least on the first play of the game, when senior Treyton Harris found an opening and took off for an 80-yard score. 

A botched punt attempt on Orem’s first drive put the Red Devils back in business, but quarterback Beckett Burton immediately threw an interception to Orem senior Creed Condie, and the Tigers tied the game on  a Jarvis run moments later. 

The stalemate was separated with a 37-yard Curtis touchdown run in the second quarter, then Springville used a nine-play drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown from Burton to Sioasi Toki to even the score once again. 

After Curtis’ touchdown run to open the second half, Springville put together another promising drive until it was foiled by a Kasen McLay interception at the goal line. Jarvis’ 82-yard run four plays later extended the score to 28-14. 

Burton finished the game 14-of-25 passing for 204 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Springville. Harris ran for 111 yards. 

Yardage was hard to come by in the second half, aside from a pair of big passing plays, as Orem’s defensive front appeared to gain steam as the game went on. 

“Our defense is special, and all year long, every week they’ve been special,” Stokes said. “Super talented group of kids. They’re super fun to watch. I’m just grateful to be on a team where I can be around kids that want to win and want to practice like they do.”

Region play continues next week with Orem hosting Spanish Fork and Springville visiting Pleasant Grove.
