Scoring barrage: Lone Peak puts it to top region foe American Fork 6-0

To say the Lone Peak girls soccer team has shown marked improvements since an uncommonly slow start to the season is quite the understatement.
After taking three losses in their first four games played, the Knights have now ripped off eight straight wins and seem to be peaking into their typical top form with a 6-0 demolition of Region 3 rival American Fork on Thursday as the latest piece of evidence.
After allowing several opportunities get by in the first half, Lone Peak left almost nothing slide by during the game’s final 40 minutes, booting through six total goals against a very good Caveman squad.
“The last three games we’ve had tight games, and a double overtime game, you know? So we kind of wanted to finally get one where we weren’t going into overtime and playing 100 minutes. So, that’s kind of my challenge to them today,” said Lone Peak coach Shantel Jolley.
Challenge apparently accepted, to say the least.
Leading the charge was Sasha Castro, who provided a hat trick while starting off the scoring barrage early in the second half. Also adding goals were Sami Schiffman, Sadie Stratton and Indy Jackson in what proved one of the more prolific final 40 minutes you’ll see at the 6A prep soccer level.
So what changed, specifically, and how did the scoring count escalate so dramatically?
“It was just the little battles we weren’t uh we weren’t winning, you know?,” Jolley said. “Things like headers, 50/50s, we need to be a little more physical. So, yeah, there wasn’t a whole lot tactically that I felt we had to change. It was just uh doing a little better on the small things.”
“We just we really just started flying,” added Lone Peak forward Sadie Stratton. “They almost scored on us to start out, and we just kept pushing, kept the grind up, and we really just pulled through. And just that’s what we’ve been training for this entire season. We’ve had a few rough bumps at the beginning of the season, but we’ve really figured it out. We’re really starting to fly right now.”
As mentioned, things didn’t come easy for the Knights at the beginning of the season. The challenge of replacing a bevy of seniors along with having to deal with a bit too many injuries conspired in dealing Lone Peak a 1-3 start to the season, which included losses to Park City, Green Canyon and Crimson Cliffs.
But the team got healthier week by week while Jolley, who has become quite used to churning out top teams began to get the best out of her players to the point where they raced by a then 8-2 American Fork team.
“We’re finally just kind of figuring each other out,” Jolley explained. “We changed some things up, and the girls have really responded to the changes we made from earlier this season. The new ones are starting to realize what it takes to be in this program and the culture it takes to keep winning.”
And no one knows how to win better than Lone Peak, a team that has won two of the last three state championships while regularly sending players to play at the collegiate level.
As Jolley admits, this season has worked to be quite a bit different, and although no one wants to lose any game, what her team was made to endure early on the the season could very much provide the ultimate dividend at the end.
“A loss is only a loss if you don’t learn from it,” Jolley concluded. “So for us, we’ve taken them as learning experiences up to this point, and I think they’ve done a good job learning and getting better from those games.”
With the win Lone Peak improves to 9-3 on the season and will next take on region foes Skyridge and Lehi. American, which fell to 8-3 on the season with the loss, will look to rebound versus Corner Canyon and then Lehi next week.
