BYU-Wyoming football matchups and prediction: Cougars looking for more home success

By Jared Lloyd - | Sep 23, 2022

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake prepares to take the field before the 2OT win over Baylor at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022.

Here is Jared Lloyd’s look at the BYU-Wyoming matchups, including his prediction for the final score for Saturday’s game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo:

BYU offense vs. Wyoming defense

Expect the Cowboys to come in determined to force BYU to be one-dimensional by taking away the run, like Oregon and Baylor did. The problem is that the Cougars will turn to Jaren Hall early to get things going through the air, then churn out the yards on the ground after they make Wyoming pay for stuffing the box.

Edge: BYU

BYU defense vs. Wyoming offense

The Cowboys have won three straight on the strength of their run game, but the BYU defense will be fired up and prepared to not repeat the mistakes of last week. Wyoming quarterback Andrew Peasley needs a big game to give the Cowboys a chance.

Edge: BYU

Coaching

Just like after a big win, Cougar head coach Kalani Sitake will look to keep his team on an even keel after a tough road loss. He took a lot on himself and his staff after the defeat, so this is the first chance to show improvement. Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl is a savvy veteran who will have his guys ready for a tough environment.

Edge: Even

Intangibles

BYU is back at home for another night contest, which has been a recipe for success for the Cougars. It will be key for BYU to not be listless after getting blasted by Oregon, while Wyoming is coming in with a big win over Air Force. Penalties and field position will be keys for both teams.

Edge: BYU

Key Matchup: The BYU tight ends vs. the Oregon linebackers

Opponents have been effective at limiting the openings for the BYU tight ends and the Cougars haven’t gone that way a lot. With Dallin Holker deciding to transfer, there will be opportunities for others to join Issac Rex and Masen Wake on the field. If this unit shines in both blocking and receiving, it will open up a lot for the rest of the BYU offense. If the Cowboy linebackers shut them down, however, Wyoming’s defense will be in good shape.

Edge: BYU

Prediction

While the Cowboys are coming in off a nice three-game winning streak, they haven’t had to deal with an atmosphere like LaVell Edwards Stadium or a team like BYU. Look for the Cougar defense to play angry, which will be good as long as it stays disciplined. The BYU offense will score early and often, allowing the Cougars to have a comfortable lead heading down the stretch.
