No respect: BYU football picked 11th in Big 12 preseason media poll

When the official release of the 2023 Big 12 Conference football media poll came out on Thursday, it’s likely that few BYU supporters were surprised to see where their Cougars were slotted.

BYU got just 318 points in the voting, which slotted them in at 11th in the 14-team league.

What fans may not have thought of, however, was the humorous historical perspective.

It is almost certain that BYU had never previously been ranked so low in a preseason ranking.

Yes, the Cougars struggled through decades in the early days but were never in a league large enough to be put at 11th.

The only previous time that BYU was in a conference that had 11 teams was during the WAC days in the mid-1990s and at that point the Cougars were far too well-respected to be ranked that low.

For the last dozen years, BYU hasn’t even been in a conference, so there haven’t been any true league preseason rankings to even think about.

It’s fascinating how lightly regarded the Cougars are, despite having gone 8-4 against Power-5 competition in the last two seasons.

Yes, it’s hard to ignore some of the personnel losses BYU has had and few teams revamping their defense are expected to thrive immediately.

Then there is the clear bias against the Big 12 newcomers.

The BYU Cougars are ahead of Houston (12th) and Cincinnati (13th) while UCF got the highest ranking at eighth.

And, as always, the Big 12 preseason rankings shouldn’t be taken too seriously, particularly given their recent track record.

Last year TCU was picked seventh (out of 10 teams) before it reached the national championship game and Kansas State was slotted fifth before it won the league title.

The BYU players and coaches know that getting high marks in July isn’t nearly as important as getting the job done starting in September, so they aren’t paying too much attention to the lack of respect.

“We see it and yet we’re going to play the best football possible,” Cougar senior quarterback Kedon Slovis said last week. “We’re excited for the opportunity. We’ll look at all that stuff at the end of the year but that’s a long ways away. We’re looking for an opportunity to just play our best football on the field.”

Slovis has been a part of teams that had high expectations in the past and said he sees that those can be beneficial and detrimental.

“Nick Saban will call it rat poison,” Slovis said. “Some people like low expectations. At the end of the day, we have our own expectations of where we think we should be as a team. We just want to play consistently our level of football as best we can, day to day, week in and week out. If we can do that, I think we’ll be pretty happy with where we stand.”

Here is the complete release from BYU on the preseason rankings:
