Cougar alumna Courtney Wayment placed fourth overall and fourth in her heat on Sunday to qualify for the Olympic 3000m steeplechase final Tuesday afternoon at the Stade de France.
Wayment ran 9:10.72 in her Olympic debut. The four-time NCAA champion raced in the first of three heats with the top-five in each heat advancing to the final. Section one deemed to be the fastest as the top-six also had the top-six fastest times overall. The On Cloud professional is one of two members of team USA to advance as Valerie Constein will also race in Tuesday’s final at 1:14 p.m. MT.
“I think I have kind of let go of expectations a lot” said Wayment. “I’m here to not put a cap or a ceiling on what I am and not put up any expectations. I want to give myself the best chance and make myself proud, whatever that looks like.”
BYU women’s head cross country coach and associate director of track and field Diljeet Taylor lauded both the performances of Wayment and Whittni Orton Morgan, who reached the finals of the 5,000-meters on Friday by placing 15th overall and sixth in her heat.
“I am super proud of Courtney and Whittni for moving through to the finals,” Taylor said. “The plan was to come here and race their hearts out. They did that on the biggest stage. I am really proud and excited for both finals.”
Morgan will compete in the 5000-meter final Monday morning at the Stade de France, which is scheduled to take place at 1:15 p.m. MT.
Two other track athletes with BYU ties will also get their first opportunity on the Olympic stage on Monday as current Cougar James Corrigan and ex-BYU star Kenneth Rooks will run in the heats of the men’s 3000m steeplechase Monday at 11:04 a.m. MT.
