BYU enjoyed another banner year of impressive track and field performances with plenty of school records broken and national recognitions.

Here’s a look back at what the Cougars accomplished during the 2024 season:

Women’s track and field

The BYU women’s track and field’s 2024 season was highlighted by a DMR national championship, individual Big 12 championship, fourth place finish at the Big 12 indoor championships and a second-place finish at the Big 12 outdoor championships.

BYU’s distance medley relay squad of Sadie Sargent, Sami Oblad, Carlee Hansen and Riley Chamberlain won a national championship at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships March 8 in Boston. The Cougars’ time of 10:51.42 was the third-fastest DMR ever run at the indoor championships and marked BYU’s second DMR national title in four seasons.

Lexy Halladay-Lowry set a new Texas Tech Sports Performance Center facility record of 9:03.66 en route to her 3000m conference title Feb. 24 in Lubbock. The junior from Meridian, Idaho made her mark as the first woman from BYU track and field to win a Big 12 individual title.

The Cougar women placed fourth at their first-ever Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships with 71 points February 23-24 in Lubbock.

With 28 points, BYU placed seventh overall at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships March 7-9 in Boston.

The Cougars placed second at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships scoring 98 points May 9-11 in Waco.

Men’s track and field

The BYU men’s track and field season also had a great year, culminating in four First Team All-Americans, an Individual Outdoor Big 12 Champion and five new school records.

Lucas Bons highlighted the men’s team at the 2024 Indoor National Championships in Boston, with his third place performance in the men’s mile, earning First Team All-American recognition. BYU also saw Second Team All-Amercian performances from Aidan Troutner in the mile as well as the Cougars’ 4x400m team featuring Eli Hazlett, Trey Jackson, Abram Schaap and Josh Taylor.

The Cougars saw three men earn First Team All-American status at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Euguene, Oregon, with all three athletes coming from the throws group. Danny Bryant placed third in the shot put with a new school record and personal best mark of 20.02m/65-8.25. Senior Cameron Bates placed eighth in the javelin with a toss of 72.09m/236-6, while fellow senior Dallin Shurts placed eighth as well in the discus throw with a mark of 59.04m/193-8.

The men’s program saw its first Big 12 Individual Champion in 3000-meter steeplechase runner James Corrigan who bested the field at the 2024 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas on May 10. Corrgian crossed the line in 8:29.84, running beneath the USATF Olympic Trials qualifying mark.

The sophomore from Los Angeles went on to place third overall at the USATF Olympic Trials on June 23, and was paced later that week at an additional race to earn the automatic qualifying spot on Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. His time of 8:13.87 marked a new school record and personal best for Corrigan.

Three other school records were achieved in addition to Bryant and Corrigan’s performances. Sprinter Trey Jackson ran 46.23 in the indoor men’s 400m to rise to the top of the board. That same meet Jackson joined in the program’s 4x400m relay team with Josh Taylor, Abram Schaap and Eli Hazlett who achieved a new school record time of 3:05.22. Fellow sprinter Riley Hunt took down a 45 year-old record in the 110m Hurdles in the Premlinary Round of the 2024 Outdoor Championships in Fayettville, Arkansas crossing the line in 13.70.

Corrgian and six BYU track and field alums will compete at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. See the Summer Olympics Page for details.
