BYU offense vs. Utah defense
This is one of the underrated matchups in the Big 12 this season, pitting the Cougar offense that has scored the most points per game in conference play (37.6) against the Ute defense that has allowed the second-fewest points per game (19.8). BYU will have some success, but Utah will force the Cougars into some mistakes and short drives more often than not.
Edge: Utah
BYU defense vs. Utah offense
The Cougars have been clearly better on defense than Utah has been on offense, as the Utes have had a tough time putting points on the board during their four-game losing streak. BYU will follow the same model other teams have employed with success: Focus on stopping the run and see if whichever Utah QB plays can consistently make throws.
Edge: BYU
Coaching
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake is facing his mentor in Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, a matchup that generally favors the mentor. But the Cougars have numerous coaches on staff who have worked with Whittingham and know how he thinks. Utah has also had some coaching disarray as it changed offensive coordinators midseason. That’s usually a sign of problems.
Edge: BYU
Intangibles
BYU will be on the road in the most hostile environment it will face all year. Utah comes into the game with nothing to lose and hungry to end the Cougars’ undefeated season. BYU will need to force some turnovers, which is something it has been very good at in 2024.
Edge: Utah
Key Matchup: BYU running backs vs. Utah linebackers
The Ute defense traditionally has been very stout up front, limiting the run lanes for opponents and getting after the quarterback. While Utah is still good in that department, there have been creases that have allowed conference teams to average nearly 150 yards per game on the ground. BYU needs to get LJ Martin, Hinckley Ropati and the other RBs going to control time of possession, take the Ute crowd out of the game and open up opportunities for play-action passes.
Edge: BYU
Prediction
Anyone who likes defensive football will be in for another treat in this game. Neither team will be able to consistently drive the ball down the field but will capitalize on some short-field opportunities. The first half will be a slugfest with neither team leading by more than a touchdown. BYU will get a couple of big plays in the third quarter to move in front, but Utah will rally with a big play of its own to make things interesting down the stretch. In the end, though, Jake Retzlaff will pick up a key third-down conversion in the final minutes to secure another Cougar win.
BYU 23, Utah 15
