Staton, Burgess sign with BYU men’s basketball

7-foot center Xavion Staton, from Las Vegas, officially signed a letter-of-intent with the BYU men's basketball team on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024.The top rim protecting center in the country, Xavion Staton, has signed with BYU, head coach Kevin Young announced on Wednesday afternoon.
“We are thrilled to welcome Xavion and his entire family to BYU,” Young said. “They are a great fit into our program and can’t wait to see them all at our games next year. Xavion is a great young man with an incredibly bright future. We love his defensive-minded approach and are excited about him anchoring our defense. Offensively he fits in perfectly to our style of play and gives us an elite athlete with great size.”
A consensus four-star recruit, Staton becomes the highest-rated high school recruit to sign with the Cougars with a 247Sports composite score of 0.9883. He is the top-rated recruit in the state of Nevada and rated as the No. 23 player in the country according to 247Sports.
The 7-footer was named the 2023-24 Gatorade Nevada Boys Basketball Player of the Year, marking the first time a player from Sierra Vista High School earned the award. He led the Mountain Lions to a 23-9 record and the Class 4A state championship, averaged 13.8 points, 14.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. The First Team All-Desert League selection also participated in a U.S. Men’s Basketball Junior National Team minicamp last fall.
Three of the six highest recruits in program history have signed with the Cougars since Young was named the 19th head coach of BYU men’s basketball on April 16, 2024.
Chamberlain Burgess became the first signee of the 2025 class Wednesday morning.
“We’re super expected to add Chamberlain and his family to BYU,” Young said. “He has BYU in his blood, and it’s great to have him and his family officially join our program. We love his versatility offensively and defensively with his wide-ranging skill set. His length and athleticism will be a welcomed addition as well. He has so much upside and will only continue to get better.”
Burgess, a four-star recruit according to 247Sports and ESPN, signs with the Cougars as the highest-rated recruit who plays in the Utah High School Athletic Association. He will play his senior season at Orem High School after helping the Utah Prospects win their second straight Adidas 3SSB championship this past summer.
The 6-foot-9 forward played his junior season at Lone Peak High School, earning Deseret News All-State Honorable Mention accolades after averaging 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. He recorded five double-doubles, including a 20-point, 19-rebound performance against Rancho Cucamonga High School.
Both of Burgess’s parents played at BYU with his dad, Josh, appearing in five games during the 2004-05 season. His mom, Ashleigh, appeared in 50 games during her three years in Provo helping the Cougars make the NCAA Tournament in 2002-03.
