BYU football at Arizona State grades: Resiliency improves Cougar marks, mistakes drop them
Harold Mitchell, Special to the Herald
BYU junior Keelan Marion scores a touchdown during the Big 12 game against Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024.BYU football beat writer Jared Lloyd gives his grades for the Cougar position units and coaches for Saturday’s game against Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, Arizona:
Quarterback
Jake Reztlaff made some pinpoint passes that rallied BYU after the poor start. He unofficially finished 23-of-38 for 346 yards and a touchdown, but had two interceptions. The first was on a tipped pass that wasn’t entirely his fault, but the second was just a pass with too much juice that proved devastating.
Grade: C+
Running back
LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati never really got rolling in the run game and had limited carries as BYU tried to come back from the big deficit. Ropati did have a big 26-yard catch-and-run, and both played key roles in pass protection.
Grade: C+
Wide receivers/tight ends
Darius Lassiter made up for an early drop as he finished with 103 yards on five catches and hauled in a two-point conversion. Chase Roberts also went over 100 yards (unofficially) with his final catch, while Jojo Phillips caught a TD pass and Keelan Marion ran for two scores.
Grade: B+
Offensive line
This unit wasn’t great in run blocking, although BYU did get to 103 yards on the ground. Retzlaff was sacked once and pressured at other times, but it held up long enough on most plays in the second half for the receivers to find openings.
Grade: C+
Defensive line
The Cougars struggled to tie up blockers for much of the game and often didn’t make plays when they had chances. But BYU did stop Arizona State on downs twice in key situations, which helped the unit’s grade. Tyler Batty was also second on the team with eight tackles.
Grade: D+
Linebackers
Isaiah Glasker led the Cougars with 12 tackles and made a key stop on Sun Devil quarterback Sam Leavitt in the fourth quarter to give BYU a shot to win.
Grade:
Secondary
BYU had a costly defensive holding penalty nullify a sack and a miscommunication resulted in an easy long TD pass for the Sun Devils. Tanner Wall did get an interception and the entire group had to come up with plays in run support as well.
Grade:
Special teams
This unit wasn’t awful overall. Will Ferrin did his job by making his 49-yard field goal attempt and kicking the ball into the end zone on kickoffs. Sam Vander Haar’s punt ended up inside the 10-yard line and the Cougar kickoff return did OK. But the costly ricochet on the ASU squib kick was a really tough break and the group didn’t come up with a big play the other direction.
Grade: C+
Coaching
BYU didn’t have many answers in the first half, giving up long drives and struggling to convert. The halftime adjustments, however, paid big dividends and the Cougar coaches put their players in positions to succeed. In the end, though, they didn’t get the job done.
Grade: C-
