BYU-Houston football matchups and prediction: Cougars will win … but which ones?
Here is Jared Lloyd’s look at the BYU-Houston matchups, including his prediction for the final score for Saturday’s game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo:
BYU offense vs. Houston defense
BYU has had times where they look almost unstoppable and times where they can’t seem to get anything going. This is a solid Houston defense that will be physical in the trenches and look to force mistakes, something BYU has been prone to do in the last few weeks.
Edge: Houston
BYU defense vs. Houston offense
Houston has had a tough time moving the ball all season and an even tougher time putting points on the board, ranking dead last in the nation in average points per game. BYU’s defense has not been perfect but it should be ready and motivated for this contest.
Edge: BYU
Coaching
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake has seen his team come up short in consecutive weeks and needs to get them clicking again, which is easier said than done. Houston head coach Willie Fritz has been on a roller-coaster ride in his first season, with some impressive wins and disappointing losses.
Edge: BYU
Intangibles
BYU will be at home on Senior Night, which can both bring more energy and end up being a distraction. The weather will be much colder than Houston is accustomed to, which could make a difference. Both teams will look to create turnovers and capitalize on good field position.
Edge: BYU
Key Matchup: BYU defensive line vs. the Houston offensive line
The best way for Houston to go into Provo and upset BYU is to control the clock. The BYU defense has been susceptible to offenses that can get the run game going, particularly when the QB is used effectively and Houston quarterback Zeon Chriss is quite capable. On the other hand, this is a BYU defensive front that is loaded with seniors who will want to make the most of their final home game. If they tie up blockers and keep the visitors behind the sticks, BYU should be in good shape.
Edge: BYU
Prediction
BYU won’t be able to run up the score against the solid Houston defense, but the home Cougars will get some big plays and that will put the visiting Cougars in catchup mode. It won’t be a flawless game for either team with turnovers and penalties being a factor, but BYU will score a couple of first-half touchdowns to get the momentum and then never let Houston get close enough to be dangerous. Look for the ground game to put together a time-consuming drive in the fourth quarter to secure the BYU win.
BYU 27, Houston 13
