BYU-UCF football matchups and prediction: Knights and long road trip next test for Cougars

Marcia Harris, Special to the Herald
BYU junior safety Tanner Wall runs the ball up the field after intercepting a pass during the Big 12 game against Oklahoma State at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024.Here is Jared Lloyd’s look at the BYU-UCF matchups, including his prediction for the final score for Saturday’s game at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando:
BYU offense vs. UCF defense
The Cougars look to build on the offensive performance that did just enough to beat Oklahomas State. BYU’s running game is improving with LJ Martin, which makes balance more attainable. The Knights have skill and talent on the defensive side of the ball but have struggled to be consistent.
Edge: BYU
BYU defense vs. UCF offense
The Cougars generally have done pretty well against the run this season but got steamrolled to the tune of 269 yards by the Cowboys. That will have Knight running back RJ Harvey and quarterback Jacurri Brown licking their chops. Although it won’t be as easy, UCF will make some big plays and move the chains.
Edge: UCF
Coaching
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake established a culture of believing that has paid dividends throughout the season as the Cougars keep winning. UCF head coach Gus Malzahn has had great successes in his career but their are rumblings of discontent in Orlando as the season has gone the wrong direction recently.
Edge: BYU
Intangibles
BYU will be on the road against a team that desperately needs a win — and a big upset would be even better. The weather shouldn’t be a huge factor and the Cougars always have a significant fan presence on the road. Both teams will need to limit turnovers and penalties to have a shot at winning.
Edge: UCF
Key Matchup: BYU secondary vs. UCF quarterback Jacurri Brown
Multiple Cougar opponents this season have found success with running quarterbacks and Brown fits that mold (38 carries for 330 yards and two TDs). While the BYU defensive line and linebackers shoulders some of the responsibility of keeping the Knight sophomore in check, it’s up to the Cougar secondary to both limit Brown’s ability to find receivers downfield and come up to make stops when he carries the ball. But Tanner Wall, Crew Wakely, Jakob Robinson, Marque Collins and the rest of the BYU defensive backs will be up for the challenge.
Edge: BYU
Prediction
Both teams will have offensive success and move the ball, particularly on the ground. Neither will get a huge advantage in the first three quarters as there will be some long drives that put points on the board. The Cougars will take advantage of a Knight turnover to get a little separation, only to have UCF rally in the fourth quarter. It will again be exciting down the stretch but the BYU defense will close out the win with a big fourth-down stop.
BYU 36, UCF 30
