BYU head coach Kalani Sitake and players celebrate with the Cougar fans after the Big 12 game against UCF at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024.

BYU football beat writer Jared Lloyd gives his grades for the Cougar position units and coaches for Saturday’s game against UCF at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando:

Quarterback

Jake Reztlaff’s numbers weren’t amazing as he ended up 16-of-24 passing for 228 yards with two TDs, 14 carries for 38 yards and another score, but he managed the game well and came up with big plays when they were needed. He did take three sacks and had the ball stripped for the only Cougar turnover, but this was a solid showing overall.

Grade: A-

Running back

LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati were workhorses, pounding away and getting a lot of tough yards. Martin did most of his working the first half, ending up with 101 yards on 15 carries with a TD. Ropati took over after the break, finishing with 13 carries for 83 yards. Both did well against the aggressive UCF defense.

Grade: A

Wide receivers/tight ends

There may not have been many passes to go around but a number of guys made the most of them. Chase Roberts had two receptions but one was for a 62-yard TD and the other was a circus grab where he pinned the ball against his helmet at the 1-yard line to set up another score. Mata’ava Ta’ase got another TD for the tight ends, while Darius Lassiter and Keelan Marion made some key plays as well.

Grade: A

Offensive line

This unit did give up more sacks than normal (3) and allowed a defender to get behind Jake Retzlaff and strip the ball — but it also opened up a lot of holes for the ground game. Any time a team rushes for 252 yards it means the guys up front were doing their jobs well.

Grade: A

Defensive line

Blake Mangelson made some big plays, including getting a sack and knocking down a third-down pass. The rest of the line also played an enormous role in tying up blockers and keeping the potent UCF run game in check for long stretches of the game. There were some offsides calls, however, that were uncharacteristic.

Grade: A-

Linebackers

Isaiah Glasker again came up big, getting a tackle for a loss and an interception as well as a two-point conversion stop. The Cougars did get gashed for a few big runs, but did a much better job of filling the gaps and keeping the Knights from being able to move the ball.

Grade: B+

Secondary

Faletau Satuala was the happy recipient of an overthrown pass by UCF, notching his first interception. BYU did well for much of the game at having defensive backs help on run stop will limiting pass openings, although UCF did have some success in the final minutes.

Grade: B+

Special teams

Not a whole lot more could’ve been asked from this group, although it can’t be said that it did anything game-changing. The fake field goal from Sam Vander Haar to Will Ferrin was well run and got the first down (although Ferrin later had to make the field goal anyway). Ferrin made all of his kicks and put the ball where he wanted on kickoffs. The punting and coverage teams were good as well.

Grade: A

Coaching

BYU proved to be prepared to play in all phases of the game and the coaches deserve credit for making sure that happened. There were some plays left on the field and the Cougars didn’t do great down the stretch, but the team overall was solid from the beginning to the end. The staff is keeping the team focused and seeing results.

Grade: A-
