Big 12 Football Power Rankings: Utah-Baylor, OSU-Arkansas, Kansas-Illinois highlight Week 2 matchups

Here’s our weekly power rankings of Big 12 teams with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 11 Utah (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Cam Rising was 10 of 15 for 254 yards and five touchdowns — three to tight end Brant Kuithe — in just one half of play as No. 12 Utah routed FCS Southern Utah 49-0.

Game On: Saturday vs. Baylor (1-0, 0-0 Big 12), 1:30 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? Rising’s backup is freshman Isaac Wilson, younger brother of NFL quarterback Zac Wilson. Isaac Wilson was 7 of 11 for 74 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against Southern Utah. … The Utes won the first-ever meeting against Baylor, taking a 20-14 victory in Waco last season.

2. No. 17 Kansas State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Kansas State limited Tennessee-Martin to 134 total yards and Avery Johnson threw two touchdown passes as the Wildcats rolled to a 41-6 victory.

Game On: Saturday at Tulane (1-0), 10 a.m. MT

What’s Up? Since 2021, the Wildcats have outscored four opening opponents 144-13. … Tulane has won both previous matchups with Kansas State, including a 17-10 victory in Manhattan (2022).

3. No. 16 Oklahoma State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Ollie Gordon ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass as No. 17 Oklahoma State defeated FCS South Dakota State 44-20.

Game On: Saturday vs. Arkansas (1-0), 10 a.m. MT (ABC)

What’s Up? Alan Bowman, beginning his seventh year of eligibility, was 24 of 33 for 265 yards and three touchdowns for Oklahoma State in the opener. … Arkansas leads the overall series with the Cowboys 29-14-1 but the two teams haven’t faced each other since 1980, a 33-20 Razorbacks victory in Little Rock.

4. No. 19 Kansas (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Devin Neal ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns on just eight first-half carries as No. 22 Kansas blasted FCS Lindenwood 48-3.

Game On: Saturday at Illinois (1-0), 5 p.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? Kansas outscored Lindenwood 27-0 in the second quarter of its opener. … The series between the Jayhawks and Illinois is tied at 3-3, with Kansas picking up a 24-23 victory in Lawrence last year.

5. No. 20 Arizona (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Tetairoa McMillian set a school record with 304 receiving yards, scoring four touchdowns as No. 21 Arizona raced past New Mexico 61-39.

Game On: Saturday vs. Northern Arizona (1-0), 8 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? The Wildcats have won nine straight games over two seasons, one short of the school record. … Arizona leads the series with Northern Arizona 16-2 but the two teams have split the past two games, with the Lumberjacks pulling off a 21-19 upset in 2021 in Tucson and the Wildcats winning 38-3 last season, also in Tucson.

6. UCF (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: UCF ran for 454 yards, with RJ Harvey totaling 142 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries, in a 57-3 thrashing of FCS New Hampshire.

Game On: Saturday vs. Sam Houston (1-0), 4:30 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? The 454 rushing yards against New Hampshire was just seven yards shy of setting a school record. … Sam Houston powered past Rice 34-14 in its opener as Hunter Watson threw two touchdown passes and the Bearkats scored twice in 50 seconds.

7. TCU (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Josh Hoover threw for 353 yards and the go-ahead touchdown with 3:13 to play to lead TCU to a 34-27 victory against Stanford.

Game On: Saturday vs. Long Island (0-1), 6 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? TCU had 100 yards in penalties, several dropped passes, two turnovers and a missed field goal in a sloppy win against the Cardinal. … Long Island dropped a 27-21 decision to Albany to open the season.

8. Baylor (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Dequan Finn threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lift Baylor to a 45-3 victory against FCS Tarleton.

Game On: Saturday at No. 11 Utah (1-0, 0-0 Big 12), 1:30 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? Finn, a sixth-year senior transfer from Toledo who was named the MAC Player of the Year last season, had a 39-yard touchdown run on the Bears first possession. … Utah opened the 2024 season by pounding Southern Utah 49-0.

9. BYU (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Jake Retzlaff threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns as BYU opened the season with a 41-13 victory against FCS Southern Illinois.

Game On: Friday at SMU (1-0), 5 p.m. MT (ESPN2)

What’s Up? BYU is now 19-0 all-time against FCS competition. … The Cougars are 4-0 in the series against SMU, including a 24-23 victory in the 2022 New Mexico Bowl. … The Mustangs opened the season with a 29-24 victory at Nevada.

10. Iowa State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Rocco Becht threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Iowa State topped FCS North Dakota 21-3.

Game On: Saturday at No. 21 Iowa (1-0), 1:30 p.m. MT (CBS)

What’s Up? North Dakota kept the game close with ball control, running 72 plays to just 48 for Iowa State and converted 11 of 20 third downs. … Iowa leads the overall series with the Cyclones 47-23 and has won seven of the past eight, including a 20-13 victory in Ames last season.

11. West Virginia (0-1, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: West Virginia managed just 246 yards of total offense in a 34-12 loss to No. 8 Penn State in a game delayed by lightning.

Game On: Saturday vs. Albany (1-0), 4 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? The Mountaineers have lost four straight season openers for the first time in 132 seasons of football. … Seven McGee totaled 119 yards on five receptions, including a 41-yard touchdown, as Albany held off Long Island University 27-21.

12. Texas Tech (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Behren Morton threw for 378 yards and five touchdowns but Texas Tech had to get a two-point conversion stop in overtime to hold on for a 52-51 victory against FCS Abilene Christian.

Game On: Saturday at Washington State (1-0), 8 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? Taj Brooks had 153 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries for Texas Tech in the overtime victory against Abilene Christian. … The Red Raiders lead the series with Washington State 2-0 with wins in 1963 (16-7) and 1964 (28-10), both time in Lubbock.

13. Colorado (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Shedeur Sanders threw for 445 yards and four touchdowns, three to Travis Hunter, as Colorado held off FCS power FCS North Dakota State 31-26.

Game On: Saturday at Nebraska (1-0), 5:30 p.m. MT (NBC)

What’s Up? Jimmy Horn caught seven passes for 198 yards and a touchdown and Hunter finished with seven catches for 132 yards and three scores against North Dakota State. … Nebraska leads the overall series with the Buffaloes 49-21-2 but Colorado has won the past three meetings, including a 36-14 win in Boulder last season.

14. Arizona State (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Sam Leavitt threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns to lead Arizona State to their first victory as a member of the Big 12, a 48-7 defeat of Wyoming.

Game On: Saturday vs. Mississippi State (1-0), 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Arizona State scored a defensive touchdown just 41 seconds into the game against Wyoming, Zyrus Fiaseu picking off an Evan Svoboda pass and running 29 yards for the TD. … This is the first time the Sun Devils and Mississippi State have played in football.

15. Cincinnati (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Brenan Sorsby threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns while adding two scores on the ground in his first start to lead Cincinnati to a 38-20 victory against FCS Towson.

Game On: Saturday vs. Pitt (1-0), 10 a.m. (ESPN2)

What’s Up? Cincinnati picked up 208 of its 275 yards rushing in the second half against Towson. … Pitt leads the overall series against the Bearcats 8-5 but Cincinnati has won the past three meetings, including a 27-21 victory last season in Pittsburgh.

16. Houston (0-1, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: UNLV picked up its first win against a Big 12 team since 2008 by beating Houston 27-7.

Game On: Saturday at No. 15 Oklahoma (1-0), 5:45 p.m. MT (SEC Network)

What’s Up? Houston was 2 of 15 on third downs and had 59 yards of offense at halftime in the loss to UNLV. … Oklahoma leads the overall series with Houston 3-1, including a 49-31 victory in Norman in 2019.
