Here is Jared Lloyd’s look at the BYU-Baylor matchups, including his prediction for the final score for Saturday’s game at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas:

BYU offense vs. Baylor defense

The Cougars didn’t put up great numbers against Kansas State but capitalized on three short fields, then managed the game with a big lead. That means BYU still has questions to answer about consistency. The Bears have been pretty good on defense this season, despite its disastrous finish at Colorado last week.

Edge: Even

BYU defense vs. Baylor offense

The Cougars are one of two teams in the nation that have yet to allow a passing touchdown. BYU is finding a good balance between solid coverage and creating disruption. The Bear offense has dangerous pieces but has gotten most of its points against mediocre defenses.

Edge: BYU

Coaching

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake continues to have his squad perform closer to his expectations than the national expectations. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda hasn’t been able to get things back on track in the last few years, which has some wondering if the Bears will move on at some point despite his huge success in 2021.

Edge: BYU

Intangibles

BYU has won two road games already but this will be the toughest test yet as McLane Stadium is a great atmosphere. The weather is supposed to be warm but not crazy hot. The early-morning start, however, gives the Bears an edge as the Cougars haven’t fared well in those games. BYU is coming in off a big win and risking a letdown, while Baylor is trying to bounce back from a brutal OT loss.

Edge: Baylor

Key Matchup: BYU wide receivers vs. the Baylor secondary

The Bears have a big, athletic defensive front, so it won’t be easy for the Cougars to open up a lot of running lanes particularly early in the game. That means BYU needs to open things up through the air. Jake Retzlaff has a number of receivers to turn to, led by junior Chase Roberts, but they need to be in the right spots and make catches even with contact. If the Cougars get a few big plays, that will put BYU in great position to get the win.

Edge: BYU

Prediction

Both teams will make some early mistakes but then the contest will settle into being a tough, physical showdown. Neither offense will consistently have success, but Jake Retzlaff will hit a couple of big passes to put the Cougars in front. Baylor will score late and have a chance to rally, but the BYU defense will get a stop to close out the win.

BYU 25, Baylor 17
