College Roundup: BYU baseball swept by TCU in doubleheader

The BYU baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday, April 4, 2025.FORT WORTH, Texas — BYU baseball dropped both games, 11-6 and 8-0, in a doubleheader with TCU on Thursday at Lupton Stadium.
“That’s a really good TCU team,” BYU head coach Trent Pratt said. “Sometime you just have to tip your cap to the opponent. They got hot and we didn’t get off to our best start in either game. Our guys out of the bullpen did well but we have to get off to a better start Saturday.”
The Horned Frogs used a combined 15-2 scoring advantage in the first three innings of both games to get ahead and stay ahead as BYU’s comeback efforts fell short.
Despite a promising start with a 2-0 lead in the top of the second of Game 1, BYU was unable to overcome a 9-0 TCU run in the second and third innings, and fell 11-6 in game one. The Cougars six runs came on six hits with three left on base while TCU used 14 hits for its 11 runs and stranded nine with one error.
TCU poured it on early in Game 2 with three runs in the home half of both the first and second innings. The Horned Frogs built the lead to eight with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth while starter, Tommy LaPour, held the Cougars hitless with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
BYU recorded one hit in the game while stranding eight on base. TCU’s eight runs came on 14 hits for a final score of 8-0.

BYU gymnastics takes fourth at NCAA Utah Regional
SALT LAKE CITY — The BYU gymnastics team closed out their NCAA tournament run with a 196.000 at the Utah Regional, finishing in fourth place on Thursday.
Utah and Denver tied for first place with a 197.650, sending both teams to Regional Final on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. MT where they will take on UCLA and Minnesota. Stanford earned a third-place finish with a 196.500.
Despite pulling ahead of Stanford after rotation three, the Cougars ended their final meet of the season with a fourth-place finish and a score of 196.000.
BYU’s Olmstead tabbed to coach U.S. U21 team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — BYU women’s volleyball head coach Heather Olmstead has been named the U.S. Women’s U21 National Team head coach for this summer’s NORCECA Pan American Cup, USA Volleyball announced on Wednesday.
The Pan Am Cup will be held in San Jose, Costa Rica from July 20-28, with training held July 13-19 in Colorado Springs.
Olmstead will be joined by assistant coaches Keith Smith (TCU) and Megan Hodge Easy (Penn State, Olympian), with performance analyst Kolin Koski (LOVB), athletic trainer Britta Pestak (Hawken School/University Hospital) and team lead Kyle Thompson (Maryland).
This will mark Olmstead’s fourth-consecutive summer working with USA Volleyball. She coached the U21 squad to a gold medal at the NORCECA Continental Championship last summer and also served as an assistant coach for the 2023 Collegiate National Team (CNT), 2022 U21 team, 2019 CNT Gold Team, U.S. Women’s National team at the 2016 Pan American Cup and gold medal-winning U.S. team at the 2015 Pan American Games.
UVU wrestlers earn All-American academic awards
MANHEIM, Pa. — The National Wrestling Coaching Association (NWCA) has announced the 2025 NCAA D1 Men’s Scholar All-American Awards. Utah Valley had five who earned the recognition, which recognizes wrestlers’ accomplishments on the mat and in the classroom.
The organization recognized Terrell Barraclough, Jack Forbes, Ryker Fullmer, Smokey McClure, and Bridger Ricks. It’s the first time that all have earned the honor.
Barraclough balanced becoming the sixth All-American in program history while succeeding in UVU’s Master of Business Administration program. The Big 12 coaches voted the Kaysville, Utah native as the Big 12 Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Before enrolling at UVU, he was a three-time Academic Big Ten selection and, in 2023, was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
125-pounder Bridger Ricks and 157-pound freshman Ryker Fullmer finished their first seasons in Orem and were starters at their respective weight classes. They are currently studying Business and Analysis at the Woodbury School of Business.
Jack Forbes is in UVU’s Chemistry program and earns his second Academic award at UVU. Last season, he earned Academic All-Big 12 honors. The final Wolverine was Smokey McClure, who ended the season as the starter at 149 pounds for UVU and won his first home dual bout over Oregon State’s Victor Cajinto.
“The NWCA is proud to recognize these outstanding individuals who embody excellence in both athletics and academics,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer.
To qualify, individuals must be in the Top 8 with a 3.00 GPA, a national qualifier and a 3.2 GPA, a conference qualifier and a 3.5 GPA, or have at least 15 matches with a 60%-win record with a 3.5 GPA.
The Wolverines have now had 51 all-time earn the designation. The University of Northern Iowa led the Big 12 with 12 selected to the team.
