“Overall, top to bottom, it was a real good night,” said head coach Trent Pratt. “I was proud of how everyone competed. If we keep playing like we did tonight, good things are going to happen.”
BYU (18-16) scored nine runs on 13 hits, while stranding nine runners. UVU (24-13) scored nine runs on six hits, while stranding nine.
Robinson paced BYU at the plate with three doubles, becoming the first Cougar to accomplish the feat in seven years–the last being Jarrett Perns against LMU on March 16, 2018.
On the mound, Jake Porter earned his first win of the season and the fifth of his BYU career, going three complete innings while surrendering just two hits while striking out one.
With the victory, BYU has now won 16 of its last 18 matchups against Utah Valley in the crosstown clash.
Robinson finished 3 for 5 while Crew McChesney, Tate Gambill, Keoni Painter and Luke Anderson contributed two hits apiece.
The Wolverines struck first with a run on two hits in the top of the second inning. BYU knotted up the score in the bottom of the third with a Gambill single to right to bring home Cooper Vest for the Cougars’ first run of the game.
After holding UVU scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, BYU erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Robinson sparked the rally with a double to right, followed by a Anderson single to left. Vest then drove in Robinson with an infield single to short, and Bryker Hurdsman’s doubled to right to drive home Anderson. Gambill then grounded out to shortstop, picking up an RBI as Vest crossed the plate. A wild pitch allowed Hurdsman to score, giving BYU a 5-1 lead through five innings.
BYU added another run in the sixth inning, for a 6-1 advantage. McChesney singled to center and stole second, then Robinson followed with his third double of the game to bring him home.
A three-run seventh inning gave the Cougars a comfortable 9-1 lead. Gambill led off with a single to center and Parker Goff reached by being hit by a pitch. Painter followed with a single to third, bringing home Gambill, and McChesney then ripped a double to left-center, driving in both Painter and Goff for the eight run lead.
UVU rallied in the eighth, scoring two runs on a double, while taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and two walks.
Brayden Marx closed out the ninth inning with a flyout, groundout and strikeout for the 9-3 win.
BYU will face No. 22 Arizona in a three-game home series April 17-19 at Miller Park in Provo. Thursday and Friday’s matchups are set for 4:30 p.m. MDT with Saturday’s action kicking off at 11:30 a.m. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and BYU Radio.
UVU SOFTBALL
Utah Valley dropped its final non-conference contest of the regular season on Tuesday, falling to the Big Sky-leading Idaho State Bengals, 6-0 at Wolverine Softball Field.
ISU’s Megan Meracle held the Wolverine hitters off-balance all afternoon, scattering three hits and three walks in an efficient 92-pitch complete game. Britney Moreno recorded her team-leading 43rd hit of the season and Emma Haygood and Avery Sapp each picked up singles in the defeat.
Cam Davis got the start and held the Bengals scoreless through the first two frames, but a leadoff double and a throwing error on a sac bunt caused things to unravel in the third. Two more doubles and a single allowed ISU to plate four runs in the inning and pull away.
The Wolverines had their best scoring opportunity in the fifth when Sapp singled and Payoe Amendariz drew a walk to lead off the inning, but Meracle was able to get the next three batters in quick succession on a total of seven pitches.
ISU got a run in the sixth on a double steal play with runners on the corners, then tacked on another in the seventh via a solo homer by Ava Brown.
The Wolverines will have a week off before returning to the diamond in the Emerald City on April 25, as Utah Valley makes its final trip to Seattle to face the Seattle U Redhawks for the final time as conference rivals. First pitch of the Friday doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. MDT, and all the action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
