College Roundup: BYU’s Halladay-Lowry breaks school 5,000-meter record

BYU's Lexy Hallady-Lowry broke the school record in the 5,000 meters at the Brian Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on Thursday, April 17, 2025.AZUSA, Calif. — Lexy Halladay-Lowry broke BYU’s school record in the 5000 meters Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The senior from Meridian, Idaho ran a time of 14:52.93 for the 12.5-lap race to place second in the invitational section. Her performance broke Whittni Morgan’s 2021 school record of 15:12.90 by nearly 20 seconds.
A five-time First Team All-American in track and field, Halladay-Lowry now ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this season and No. 3 in NCAA history. She holds three individual school records at BYU: outdoor 5000m, indoor 5000m and indoor 3000m.
Riley Chamberlain finished in 15:23.88 for BYU’s No. 5 all-time mark in the 5000m. The junior from Loomis, California placed ninth overall in the invitational field.
Vanessa Alder ran a personal best of 16:20.42 and Destiny Everett finished closely behind with a 16:21.92.
In the 800 meters, two-time First Team All-American Meghan Hunter opened her outdoor season with a 2:02.62 performance to place seventh in the elite section. Freshman Tessa Buswell followed with a 2:04.69 in her collegiate outdoor debut, finishing 12th. Kylie Olsen (2:06.39) and Elyse Jessen (2:08.07) recorded personal bests in the event.
Maren Garnett led the way for the Cougars at Long Beach State in the Pacific Coast Invitational. The senior from Spearman, Texas won the pole vault competition with a clearance of 4.19m/13-9. Garnett will vault at Long Beach State again on Saturday for the Beach Invitational.
School record-holder Gretchen Hoekstre placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 53.48m/175-5 and 11th in the shot put with a distance of 14.71m/48-3.25.
Other top performances from the Pacific Coast Invitational include freshman Cortnie Barker’s eighth place finish in the high jump with a 1.67m/5-5.75 clearance and Zoey Bonds’ 12th-place finish in the hurdles with a time of 13.82.
BYU MEN’S TRACK
AZUSA, Calif. – In just his second outdoor meet as a Cougar, Tyler Mathews became the second-fastest half-miler in program history on Thursday evening at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Only Shaquille Walker has run faster than the freshman as Mathews crossed the finish line in 1:46.20 just behind Washington’s Kyle Reinheimer. The time was also a collegiate best in the event for Mesa, Ariz. native .42 seconds faster than he ran at the Husky Classic in February.
Sebastian Fernandez, who Mathews passed for second on the all-time list, finished fourth in his heat and sixth overall as the All-American crossed the finish line in 1:46.79. Carter Cutting was the top finisher for the Cougars in the invitational section of the 800m as the sophomore ran 1:48.53 to finish 11th.
Isaac Hedengren had the fastest time of the day for the Cougars in the 5,000-meters as the sophomore ran a personal best time of 13:41.38 to finish 14th in his heat. Freshman Landon Heemeyer also a career day as the freshman ran 13:44.92 in the third heat finishing 11th.
Pacific Coast Invitational 34 miles down the road at Long Beach State, Danny Bryant picked up a win in the men’s shot put with a mark of 19.16m/62-10.5 on his fifth attempt of the competition. It marks the fourth time this outdoor season that the senior has thrown over 62 feet outdoors. He also finished fourth in his flight and sixth overall in the discus with a toss of 55.94m/183-6 on his first throw.
UVU BASEBALL
Utah Valley won the opening game of their series with Tarleton State University, 14-2, on Thursday night at UCCU Ballpark. UVU (25-13, 10-3) scored all 14 of their runs in the first innings to immediately put TSU (14-24, 4-7) in a hole. Mason Strong finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs, including an opposite field grand slam in the third inning.
Carston Herman (3-2) earned his third win of the year after going six innings, allowing three hits and four strikeouts. Ike Shirey for Tarleton State was the only player to record two hits, his first in the fifth inning on a single, but he was quickly erased as Massey and Colyer turned UVU’s second double play of the night.
Frei’s home run moved him into a tie with Craig Brinkerhoff (2016) and Cole Jordan (2024) for the 12th all-time in the single-season home run list.
Strong, Bach, Block, and Colyer went a combined 9-for-13 in the game, with each having at least two hits. They all scored at least a run and an RBI or more.
UVU TRACK
TORRANCE, Calif. — Oakley Olson broke the outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase record on Friday as Utah Valley University opened the weekend at the Mt. Sac Relays, the Pacific Coast Invitational at Long Beach State, and the Bryan Clay Invitational. |
Olson finished as the runner-up in Thursday’s Women’s 3,000 Steeplechase Elite race at the relays, recording a top 20 time in the west and improving on her WAC-best time in the steeplechase following her previous season-best at Stanford. She finished Thursday’s race in 10:18.78, shaving nearly four seconds off her previous PR.
Abdulsalam Farah challenged the school record in the men’s steeplechase as well, winning the men’s elite race in 8:40.47, moving him to third in the record book. Cameron Jacobs had a top-10 PR for the second straight week after finishing fourth on Thursday in 8:56.23 and moved up to No. 6 in the record book. Caleb Ream also had another personal best in the event, improving on his No. 10 mark with a ninth-place finish in 9:03.54.
At the Pacific Coast Invitational on Friday, three throwers set top 10 personal records, including Grace Degarimore, who continues her ascent up the record book and now sits at No. 2 all-time. She posted a 49.35 mark in the discus on Thursday.
Trevor Hill continued his climb in the men’s discus top 10 with a PR of 50.44 meters that puts him at No. 3 in the record book. Luis Diaz Bojorquez’ 47.55 personal best on Thursday gives him the 10th spot in the top 10.
