“I have been trying to connect like that all season long, and this is the first time I was able to put a whole meet together,” said Hoekstre. “It puts me in a great position going into championship season. That shot put school record is within my grasp, and I’m going to do everything in my power in the last college meets of my career to get my name on the top of that board.”

Kat Beachler also earned a lifetime best in the shot put with her throw of 15.08m/49-5.75. The freshman from Omaha, Nebraska, now ranks No. 7 all-time in BYU’s outdoor record books.

Cougar baseball loses 16-6 at Arizona State

BYU baseball faced a large deficit early and fell to Arizona State 16-6 on Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Phoenix.

“That’s the worst we’ve played in all three aspects of the game all year,” said BYU head coach Trent Pratt. “We know how to get better. We have to remember what makes us good and get back to super basic fundamentals. We have a lot of goals that can still be met, we just have to play better than this.”

The Cougars went down 13-0 after a 10-run second inning barrage from the Sun Devils. ASU’s 10 runs in the second came on six of its eight home runs on the night. An RBI triple in the eighth put the Sun Devils up 16-6 and brought a run rule into effect to end the game.

While the Sun Devil bats cooled and went scoreless in the third, fourth and sixth innings, the Cougars were unable to mount a comeback and dropped game three in Phoenix with six runs on 10 hits, two errors and six left on base. ASU’s 16 runs came on 13 hits with four stranded.

BYU is back in action on Monday at Grand Canyon with gametime set for 1 p.m. PDT. Watch the Cougars face the Lopes on ESPN+ or listen live on BYU Radio.

BYU softball comes up short at Baylor

BYU softball fell in game three at Baylor, 8-5 at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas, on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (30-14, 12-9 Big 12) surrendered the series to the Bears in the loss, dropping the three-game set, 2-1. Both teams recorded 12 hits in the contest, with BYU committing one error, but Baylor four-run fifth proved to be the difference in the game.

BYU will host its final series of the 2025 campaign against No. 11/12 Texas Tech, beginning on Thursday, May 1 at 5 p.m. MDT on ESPN+.
