BYU's Mika Krommenhoek gets ready to kick the ball during an exhibition soccer match against Utah Tech at South Field on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

The last tune-up before the season opener was a little out of tune.

BYU women’s soccer scored early on a penalty kick from junior Ellie Walbruch but was unable to generate any more offense in a 1-1 tie with Utah Tech in an exhibition match at South Field on Saturday.

In their preseason finale, the Cougars outshot the visiting Trailblazers 18-13.

BYU got its first scoring opportunity in the seventh minute of the game when a Utah Tech foul gave Walbruch a penalty kick which she buried in the top left corner to make the score 1-0.

In the 22nd minute the Cougars nearly added to their lead when a shot in the box by Afton Perry was blocked. Seconds later, Sophie Sivulich had a shot on goal which was saved on the line.

The Trailblazers’ closest opportunity in the first half came in the 40th minute when a shot went off the right goal post. In the opening period, there was a combined total of 11 penalties with BYU being responsible for eight of them. While Utah Tech led in time of possession in the first half having the ball 54 percent of time, BYU had the advantage in shots leading 9-6.

In the 57th minute the Trailblazers evened the score 1-1 when Tessa Thornton’s shot to the top left corner sailed past Collins. BYU had its chances late in the game with four corner kicks in the final eight minutes. In the final minute a shot inside the box by Sivulich went over the net which proved to be the last chance for either team as the game concluded 1-1.

The Cougars will begin regular season action on the road at No. 24 Minnesota on Thursday at 6 p.m. MST. The match can only be seen with a subscription to Big 10+
