College Roundup: BYU’s Davis is West Region Freshman of the Year

Davis, an outside hitter, helped the Cougars earn their second-consecutive West Region Freshman of the Year honor, while she and middle blocker Brielle Kemavor received All-West Region First Team nods. Setter Alex Bower and outside hitter Claire Little Chambers were both named Honorable Mentions.
The quad, who each received All-Big 12 honors last week, helped BYU to a 14th-straight NCAA Tournament an sixth-place finish in the Big 12 as the Cougars went 22-9 (10-8 Big 12) on the year.
Davis, also the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and a six-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week, broke BYU’s rally-scoring era and all-time freshman kill records this season, finishing with 541. The Euless, Texas/Hau’ula Hawai’i product was the leading freshman nationally in both total kills and kills per set.
She posted a team-high 10 double-doubles on the year, led the Cougars with 30 double-digit matches, good for third-most in BYU’s rally-era and finished second in the Big 12 in both total kills and points. Davis is the Cougars’
Kemavor, an All-Big 12 First Team honoree, led the league with a .374 hitting percentage and also had the fourth-most blocks in the conference, at 138. She finished with team highs in blocks in 19 of BYU’s matches, including in 15 of its final 18 contests. The Bristow, Virginia native also tallied nine double-digit kill matches, with five in the last seven. Named an All-West Region Honorable Mention last season, this is Kemavor’s second all-region honor.
Bower, also an All-Big 12 First Teamer, paced the conference in total assists (1,265) and assists per set (10.63), ranking No. 7 nationally in total assists and No. 15 in assists per set. Out of Nampa, Idaho. Bower was tied for the second-most double-doubles (8) on the team, and paced the Cougars to a .267 hitting percentage, second in the Big 12. This is the second all-region honor of her career after being named the West Region Freshman of the Year last season.
Little Chambers received All-Big 12 Second Team honors after posting double-digit kills in 26 matches, tied for 10th-most in the BYU rally-scoring era. Hailing from Temecula, California, she led the team in kills in nine matches while being tied for second on the team with eight double-doubles to go along. Little Chambers’ 40 aces led the team, were good for No. 6 in the Big 12 and No. 7 in the Cougars’ rally era. This is her second-consecutive all-region honor after being named to the First Team last season.

UVU’s Page earns all-region honors
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced its annual All-Region teams Tuesday morning, with Utah Valley’s Avery Page earning honorable mention honors in the West Region.
“I am so proud of Avery. This is a tremendous accomplishment for her,” UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. “Very well deserved. She has worked hard all year to get her to this point for others to recognize her success on the court.”
It’s the first All-Region honor for Page, who capped one of the most decorated careers in Utah Valley volleyball history. She adds the recognition to a resume that already includes WAC Player of the Year, First Team All-WAC, and WAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. The Lehi, Utah, native also earned two WAC Player of the Week awards late in the season.
Page led UVU with 341 kills and 403 points during her senior campaign. She added 214 digs and 70 total blocks and recorded at least 10 kills in 16 of Utah Valley’s 27 matches. She leaves the program ranked second all-time in aces, fourth in attempts, and fifth in kills, digs, and points. Page’s freshman-year teammate Kazna Tanuvasa was the last Wolverine to earn All-Region recognition, receiving Pacific South Honorable Mention honors in 2021. The AVCA updated its voting regions ahead of this season, shifting UVU from the Pacific to the West Region, which includes schools from Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.
BYU’s Hedengren named national track athlete of the week
NEW ORLEANS – Jane Hedengren was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women’s National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Monday.
Hedengren earned the award after her record-breaking performance at last weekend’s Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, where she won the 5,000-meter invite. The Provo, Utah, product became the first collegiate woman to break 14:50, clocking 14:44.79 to win by more than 14 seconds. Her time broke Alabama’s Doris Lemngole’s previous record by nearly eight seconds and ranks as the 10th-fastest 5,000 by an American and the 11th-fastest indoor 5,000 in world history.
The freshman is the first USTFCCCA track and field awardee of the season. It marks her third recognition this year, including during cross country season.
