Five True Facts about … Georgia Tech football

Each week the Daily Herald will provide five true facts about BYU’s latest football opponent for your enjoyment. This week, its Pop-Tarts Bowl opponent Georgia Tech.

1. Old school

Georgia Tech has fielded a football team since 1892, compiling an all-time record of 772-548-43. The Yellow Jackets claim four national championships (1917, 1928, 1952 and 1990) and 16 conference titles.

2. The Heisman

Coach John Heisman (yes, the trophy was named for him) coached Georgia Tech in a 222-0 victory against Cumberland College in 1916, the most lopsided game in college football history.

3. What should we call you?

Nicknames for the team over the years have been Blacksmiths, Engineers, Golden Tornado or just “the Techs,” Officially, Georgia Tech is known as the “Yellow Jackets” or “Ramblin’ Wreck.”

The Ramblin’ Wreck, by the way, is a 1930 Ford Model A Sports Coupe and the vehicle has led the team onto Grant Field in every home game since 1961.

4. They went there

Famous Georgia Tech alumni include Delta Airlines CEO David Garrett Jr., MailChimp co-founder Ben Chestnut, NFL Hall of Famer Calvin “Megatron” Johnson, comedian Jeff Foxworthy, 1964 Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry Kary Mullis, Apple Pay cash inventor Anish Bhatt and astronaut Richard Truly.

5. Bowling

Georgia Tech is 26-21 in bowl game appearances, most recently a 35-27 loss to Vanderbilt in the 2024 Birmingham Bowl.
