The BYU women’s distance medley relay squad of Carmen Alder, Meghan Hunter, Tessa Buswell and Riley Chamberlain broke the event’s all-time NCAA record Friday afternoon at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.

Alder clocked 3:16 for her opening 1200-meter leg, Hunter ran 52 seconds for her 400m leg, Buswell ran 2:04 in the 800m and anchor Chamberlain closed out the 1600m in 4:24 for an NCAA record DMR time of 10:37.58.

“I am really pleased with my group,” said BYU Associate Director of Track & Field Diljeet Taylor. “You can do something special in the DMR if you have really good bookends. But, to do something magical in the DMR, you need all four to be hitting it and they did that today.”

The squad’s time breaks the previous BYU program record by over seven seconds and is nearly 14 seconds faster than that posted by BYU’s 2024 national championship squad.

“We are constantly trying to push ourselves and our teammates to get better,” said anchor Chamberlain. “We are setting new standards and racing ourselves to improve each year.”

Other Cougar track successes included Jenna Hutchins winning the 5000m in a season-best time of 15:31.41 on Friday, while Sami Oblad broke the BYU 400-meter school record at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico and Lexy Halladay-Lowry broke the 3000m school record at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle on Saturday afternoon.

Oblad ran a lifetime best of 51.71 in the 400m to win the event in New Mexico and break the BYU school record by 1.3 seconds. The senior from Stansbury Park, Utah is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCAA with Saturday’s time.

BYU men’s track and field saw school records broken by Tyler Mathews and Josh Taylor as well as a 4×400-meter relay squad on Saturday.

True freshman Tyler Mathews ran 1:46.62 at the 2024 Husky Invitational in Seattle, Washington on Saturday to land atop the school record board. Mathews has quickly climbed the program top-10 list having previously ran 1:47.27 just two weeks prior at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic. Shaquille Walker previously held the school record with a 1:46.97 outing in 2016.

The sprints showed out in New Mexico with records in the 400m and 4x400m relay events being broken.

Josh Taylor crossed the finish of the individual event in 45.85. It marks the second time Taylor has held the school record, having reclaimed it after teammate Trey Jackson took the title last season. Jackson had an impressive day himself with a 46.12 outing for a new personal best.

The Cougars will compete at the Alex Wilson Invitational in the Distance Medley Relay on Saturday, Feb. 22.
