SALT LAKE CITY — No. 7 seeded Springville knew its 5A quarterfinal game with No.2 Olympus was going to be a real challenge on the defensive end.

The scout was correct.

The speedy and talented Titans scored ten baskets in the first quarter against the Red Devils on Tuesday at the Huntsman Center, nine of them layups.

Olympus proved to be a very difficult guard all afternoon, taking the momentum from that big first quarter and finishing strong for a 70-56 victory.

The Titans (22-3) will play the Timpview/Alta winner in one of Wednesday’s semifinals.

“We had some opportunities,” Red Devils coach Justin Snell said. “We got to halftime and our concern was transition and offensive rebounds. We knew they were a tough guard and the game was really just going to come down to style of play. Could we dominate in the paint and get a win, or could they stretch us and get a win? They were able to stretch us, which didn’t allow us to defensive rebound very well. Our inability to finish with a box out and get a clean look ended up costing us.”

Gavin Lowe, a lightning-quick 6-0 guard, tormented the Red Devils all game long and finished with 31 points, six rebounds and five assists. Luke Owen (14 points), Caden Jackson (11) and Ty Goldsberry (10) joined Lowe in double figures. The Titans did real damage in the paint (40 points to Springville’s 20) and on the offensive boards, turning 11 of them into an 18-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Jamyn Sondrup led Springville with 17 points and 14 rebounds, with Andrew Miller contributing 13 points.

All of those early layups and a late 3-pointer by Jackson gave Olympus a 21-15 lead heading into the second quarter. The Red Devils went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by a steal and a 3-point play by Asher Mark, to pull even at 25 with 2:02 remaining in the half. A pair of late 3-pointers from Jackson pushed the Titans to a 33-27 halftime lead.

Springville twice cut the deficit to one point in the third quarter, once on a layup from Sondrup (37-36) and the second time when Mason Hansen drilled a triple (40-39). Sam Nadauld converted a 3-point play to keep the Red Devils in the hunt but an offensive rebound by Goldsberry gave the Titans a 49-44 lead after three.

Sondrup made his second 3-pointer of the game to get Springville to 49-47, but another offensive rebound by Olympus led to a triple from Lowe and Owen found the range from deep for a 55-47 advantage with 4:20 to play. Lowe scored 11 points down the stretch, including 7 of 8 from the 3-point line, to put the game away for the Titans.

Springville, which finished third in Region 7, concludes its season with a 17-8 record. Leading scorer Andrew Miller graduates, but the Red Devils return the 6-foot-10 Sondrup, Hansen and sophomore point guard Swift Hall.

“I just love my guys,” Snell said. “That’s the message (in the locker room). Whenever a season comes to an end, the conversation is always, ‘Thanks for being coachable.’ I’m not the easiest guy to play for because I push hard and get after them. They played hard and showed that they were a cohesive team and if you took one guy away, somebody else stepped up. That takes some concentration from the players to be willing to be a group, rather than a group of individuals.”
