The combination of too many turnovers and fouls proved to be a tough situation to overcome for the BYU women’s basketball team.

The Cougars actually led Iowa State by as many as eight points and 18-12 after one quarter but the Cyclones kicked into high gear, running away for an 82-59 victory in Ames, Iowa, on Wednesday.

It was the Cougars’ fourth straight loss in Big 12 play and their sixth defeat in the past seven games.

Iowa State outscored BYU 54-26 in the middle two quarters, taking advantage of the Cougars’ foul trouble to make 24 of 31 from the charity stripe and pull away in the second half. BYU committed 25 fouls (to just 10 for Iowa State) and 19 turnovers (to the Cyclones seven).

The Cougars led 20-12 on a Delaney Gibb jumper with 9:05 to play in the second quarter but Iowa State opened up a 38-35 advantage at halftime and extended it from there in a big third quarter, outscoring BYU 28-11.

The Cougars shot 36% from the field (20 of 56) and from the 3-point line (11 of 31) and shot just 11 free throws, making eight. Freshman Delaney Gibb led BYU with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Kemery Congdon added 16 points on 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Audi Crooks led Iowa State (14-7 overall, 5-3 Big 12) with 24 points and Addy Brown contributed 22 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. Brown was 9 of 12 from the free throw line and Crooks was 6 of 10.

BYU (10-8, 1-6) will host in-state rival Utah on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MT in the Marriott Center. The Utes lead the overall series 68-43 and have won four of the past five meetings, including an 87-68 victory at the Huntsman Center in December of 2023. BYU’s last win in the series came in 2021, an 85-80 victory in Salt Lake in 2021.

Starting at $4.32/week.
