Dybantsa scores 18 points as Team USA takes care of Canada

BYU’s AJ Dybantsa recovered from a slow start to score 18 points and led Team USA to an 88-73 victory against Australia in the FIBA U-19 World Cup on Saturday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Dybantsa had just two points in the first half but scored eight in the third quarter as the USA shot out to a 25-point lead. Dybantsa struggled from the field, making just 3 of 10 shots and was 0-for-4 from the 3-point line. But he made steady trips to the foul line, where he finished 12 of 15. Dybantsa also had three rebounds, two assists, one block and four turnovers.

One of Dybantsa’s baskets was a two-handed dunk on the fast break that gave the USA a 79-63 lead with 4:51 to play in the third quarter.

Team USA shot just 36% from the field (26 of 72) and 17% from the 3-point line (4 of 23). But a 32 of 41 performance at the foul line kept the Aussies at bay. Koa Peat (Arizona) posted a double-double for the USA with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr. contributed 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

UConn’s Jacob Furphy led Canada with 24 points.

Team USA will take on France on Game 2 of Group D on Sunday at noon MT.

Gibb scores nine in Team Canada win

BYU’s Delaney Gibb scored nine points as Canada whipped El Salvador 100-34 to open play at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Americup in Santiago, Chile.

Gibb played just over ten minutes in the game, making 3 of 7 from the 3-point line in the rout. All of Gibb’s triples came in the second quarter as Canada took a 58-25 lead at halftime.

Nine players scored at least eight points for Canada, led by Tara Wallack with 11 and Sami Hill with ten.

Canada will play Argentina on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. MT.
