Dybantsa, USA move to 2-0 in FIBA U19 World Cup

For the second straight game, BYU’s A.J. Dybantsa had a strong second half and Team USA was red-hot from the field, which led to a 108-77 rout of France on Sunday at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Dybantsa scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and Christopher Brown (Louisville) was 6 of 9 from the 3-point line, leading the Americans with 25 points. Team USA shot a blistering 64% (38 of 59) from the field and made 11 of 20 (55%) from distance.

The Americans went on a 12-0 run in the first quarter and took a 30-14 lead, eventually going ahead 33-18 after one.

Dybantsa finished 5 of 6 from the field, 1 of 2 from the 3-point line and 5 of 8 on free throws, adding four rebounds and an assist in just under 20 minutes of play.

Koa Peat (Arizona) added 17 points for the USA, which is 2-0 in Group D. The Americans will play Cameron on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. MT.

On Saturday, Dybantsa recovered from a slow start to score 18 points and led Team USA to an 88-73 victory against Australia in the FIBA U-19 World Cup on Saturday in Switzerland.

Dybantsa had just two points in the first half but scored eight in the third quarter as the USA shot out to a 25-point lead.

Dybantsa struggled from the field, making just 3 of 10 shots and was 0-for-4 from the 3-point line. But he made steady trips to the foul line, where he finished 12 of 15. Dybantsa also had three rebounds, two assists,, one block and four turnovers.

One of Dybantsa’s baskets was a two-handed dunk on the fast break that gave the USA a 79-63 lead with 4:51 to play in the third quarter.

Team USA shot just 36% from the field (26 of 72) and 17% from the 3-point line (4 of 23). But a 32 of 41 performance at the foul line kept the Aussies at bay.

Peat posted a double-double for the USA with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Brown contributed 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

UConn’s Jacob Furphy led Canada with 24 points.

Canada, Gibb move to 2-0 in AmeriCup

Team Canada won big again on Sunday, defeating Argentina 71-48 to move to 2-0 in Group A of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile.The Canadians outscored their opponent 38-21 in the middle two quarters behind 18 points from Shayeann Day-Wilson.

BYU’s Delaney Gibb scored two points in 13 minutes of play, going 0-4 from the field and 0-3 from the 3-point line.

Gibb had a much better outing on Saturday, scoring nine points in a 100-34 thrashing of El Salvador. In just over ten minutes of play, Gibb was 3 of 7 from the 3-point line, all of her triples coming in the second quarter as Canada took a 58-25 lead at halftime.

Canada will face Brazil on Monday at 12:10 p.m. MT.
