BYU's Delaney Gibb will play for the Canadian Senior National Team at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile.

Team Canada went ice cold in the fourth quarter and dropped its first game in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, falling in a 74-65 decision to homestanding Brazil on Monday in Santiago.

BYU’s Delaney Gibb played ten minutes for the Canadians and scored seven points on 3 of 5 from the field, including 1 of 2 from the 3-point line. Gibb also added two rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Shayanne Day-Wilson topped Canada (2-1) with 14 points.

The game was closely contested and Canada took a 60-59 lead when Day-Wilson dropped in a 3-pointer to beat the third quarter buzzer. But the Canadians went just 2 of 18 from the field in the fourth quarter, including 0-5 from the 3-point line. Brazil, led by a double-double from Damiris Dantas (20 points, 14 rebounds) slowly pulled away for the victory.

Canada was outscored 15-5 in the final frame. Brazil, now 2-0 in Group A play, held a 30-16 advantage over Canada in points in the paint.

The Canadians continue group play on Wednesday against the Dominican Republic.

BYU women’s volleyball adds new staff member

BYU women’s volleyball has announced the hiring of technical coordinator Drew Barbee.

Barbee will be responsible for coding live stats during practices and games to provide real-time data for coaches and analysts. He will help prepare scouting reports, handle the setup and management of all tech equipment for practices, games and travel, as well as manage stat sheets to support performance tracking and postgame review.

Coming to Provo after serving as a student manager for the Illinois women’s volleyball program, Barbee graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in recreational, sport and tourism.

A Fairfield, Illinois native, Barbee played four years of college club volleyball at the University of Illinois to go along with two years of Metro Volleyball Club in Evansville, Indiana.

UVU’s Colyer headed to Pioneer League

Utah Valley first baseman CJ Colyer has signed a professional contract with the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League.

Colyer capped the 2025 season hitting .309 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs, providing a consistent power presence in the Wolverines’ lineup.

“CJ had an incredible season for us,” said UVU head coach Nate Rasmussen. “We’re very fortunate he chose us in the portal and helped us reach new heights. This is another step forward for him–he’s earned it.”

He was named to the WAC All-Tournament Team after driving in eight runs over four games, including a pivotal ninth-inning home run on May 22 that lifted UVU past Abilene Christian in the conference tournament.

Throughout the season, Colyer drove in four runs in three separate games–against Northern Colorado, Grand Canyon and Abilene Christian–and recorded three hits in five contests, including matchups with GCU, California Baptist, Tarleton State and Utah, all among the toughest pitching staffs on the schedule.

Colyer began his collegiate career at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where he played four seasons. In 2024, he led NCAA Division III with 23 home runs and was named Northwest Conference Player of the Year. The Gilroy, California, native also earned national recognition as a Preseason All-American, Second Team All-American, and a two-time All-Conference and All-Region selection for the Boxers.

He now joins former Wolverine Patrick Mills on the Billings Mustangs, who compete in the Pioneer League–a professional partner league that includes teams from California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah. Billings is currently 13-20 and in eighth place in the league. The Mustangs have signed several UVU players in recent years, including current UVU assistant coach Mitch Moralez, who spent two seasons with the club.

Colyer will wear No. 45 for the Mustangs and is expected to be available for tonight’s game (June 27) against the first-place Missoula PaddleHeads.

UVU softball signs two transfers

Utah Valley softball head coach Cody Thomson has announced the signing of transfer pitchers Hannah Ortega and Ruby Anderson, both of whom come to Orem by way of Fresno State.

“Hannah and Ruby are going to be great additions to our pitching staff,” said Thomson. “They are going to add depth to our already great staff. Pitching is my passion and I can’t wait to get them here to start working on a bright future!”

Ortega, a grad transfer southpaw from Linden, Calif., spent the last three seasons with the Bulldogs after playing her freshman campaign at Bethune-Cookman. As a freshman, she burst onto the scene with a stellar season, earning first team All-SWAC honors in addition to SWAC Freshman and Pitcher of the Year, posting a 2.98 ERA with 117 strikeouts in 183.2 IP. In two seasons played at FSU, Ortega posted a 4.38 ERA, striking out 36 in 60.2 IP.

Anderson, who will be a redshirt sophomore this upcoming season, hails from Victoria, British Columbia. The right-hander pitched 23.2 innings with 13 strikeouts as a freshman in 2024 before missing the 2025 season due to an injury. Prior to Fresno State, Anderson led her club team, the Langley Lightning, to the 2022 U-17 national championship in Canada, tossing three no-hitters to earn tournament MVP honors. Anderson has also spent time with the Canadian National Team, most recently at the 2023 Canada Cup.

Starting at $4.32/week.
