BYU roundup: Cougar women’s basketball loses at Utah on half-court bank shot in OT

Despite a 36-point outburst from Delaney Gibb, including a jumper with 35-seconds remaining that gave BYU a two-point lead, Matyson Wilke’s half-court heave dropped ending the Cougars’ comeback effort against the Utes.
“What a way to end the game,” said head coach Amber Whiting. “I’m proud of my women for battling. I am really proud of them. Hats off to Utah, they brought it too and that is what this game is supposed to be about in this rivalry. It was entertaining for sure.”
Gibb led all scorers with a career-high 36 points on 13-of-18 from the floor, going 5-for-7 from behind the arc and 5-of-6 from the line. The freshman recorded her second-career double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds while also tallying a game-high five assists, two steals and a block.
In her final regular season game, Kemery Congdon also finished in double figures for BYU with 14 points. The former Utah guard connected on a season-high four triples while posting two rebounds, an assist and a steal in her return to the Huntsman Center.
Amari Whiting scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished three assists and swiped three steals before fouling out.
The Utes led by nine in the fourth quarter before Gibb hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to three with 3:35 remaining in the game. After a miss by Congdon and a stop on the defensive end, Congdon reloaded and knocked down a right-wing triple to tie the game at 57.
On the ensuing Utah possession, Gibb stole the inbound pass and took it coast-to-coast to give BYU its first lead of the game.
After Utah free throws again knotted the game, Gibb kicked to Davenport who hit her first three of the evening to take a three-point lead with 23 seconds remaining. After a timeout to advance the ball, Utah buried a three to send the game to an extra session.
After a back-and-forth start to overtime, the teams found themselves tied at 71-71 in the final minute.
With 35 second left, Gibb came off a screen and hit a pull-up jumper from the right wing to give the Cougars a two-point lead. After a blocking foul on Kendra Gillispie, Utah again tied it up with 18 seconds remaining.
After a BYU turnover, Utah’s Matyson Wilke hit a half-court heave as the horn sounded capping a 76-73 loss for the Cougars.
BYU now awaits its seeding for the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, next week. The Cougars will play in their first-round game on Wednesday, March 5 at the T-Mobile Center on ESPN+ with the game broadcast live on BYU Radio with Jason Shepherd on the call.
Chamberlain wins mile to lead BYU at Big 12 Indoor track finals
LUBBOCK, Texas – Led by Riley Chamberlain’s championship performance in the mile, the Cougar women’s track team finished in second place with 72 points at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday. The BYU men’s team finished third overall.
“Both teams performed exceptionally well,” said director of track and field Ed Eyestone. “I’m super pleased. It was a great improvement from last year. We came within a point of second place on the men’s side, and we got second place on the women’s side. Amazing for the women to get second. For the men, third for a second year in the Big 12 is huge for us. We definitely made a big power statement, and we’re excited in the direction. Overall, the performance team was phenomenal.”
Chamberlain won the women’s mile event after she crossed in 4:31.78, finishing almost six seconds ahead of Iowa State’s Bella Heikes. The junior from Loomis, California earned 10 team points for BYU in the process. Teammates Carmen Alder and Carlee Hansen took sixth and seventh for BYU on the mile, clutching some more team points.
“My teammates and I wanted to work together and keep the pace honest,” Chamberlain said. “We all executed pretty well and it was a good day for all of us. Looking forward, I want to keep pushing and avoid people getting around me.”
The top men’s performance came from multi-event athlete Ben Barton, who took second in the heptathlon with 5944 points. It was a new school record for the Cougar from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. who knocked down his own previous record of 5814 points. His highlight of day two was a 7.85 outing in the 60-meter hurdles in which he took first overall.
“Ben did amazing the last two days,” said multi-events coach Tiffany Hogan. “He is still learning the heptathlon and continues to improve at a remarkable rate. We are excited for his trajectory going into the national championships.”
BYU will travel to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on March 14-15.
Cougar softball hits nine homers in doubleheader sweep
Fueled by a barrage of home runs, including two grand slams, BYU softball swept a doubleheader against San Jose State (14-3) and UC Riverside (17-2) at Bill Simoni Field in Stockton, Calif., on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars hit nine home runs between the two games, with Ilove’a Brittingham tallying three of their long bombs. Kate Dahle tossed nine innings of two-run ball across the doubleheader, striking out 11 on the day.
BYU will open Big 12 play at Arizona State next week. The three game series will begin on Thursday, Mar. 6 at 6 p.m. MT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
BYU baseball completes sweep of Gonzaga
BYU captured its first series sweep of the 2025 baseball season with a commanding 17-8 win over Gonzaga on Saturday at Steve Hertz Field in Spokane, Wash.
The Cougars scored in double digits in all three games, rolling up 40 runs (10-13-17) in the three-game series.
Led by Crew McChesney and Ryder Robinson who each drove in four runs, BYU (7-4) scored 17 runs on 14 hits on Saturday, including nine extra base hits, while Gonzaga (2-7) had eight runs on 14 hits.
“I was proud of how our guys battled, especially after getting down three runs early,” said BYU head coach Trent Pratt. “They answered right back with two runs in the second, then exploded for 11 in the fourth. We hit a lot of balls hard including a couple of home runs that opened the floodgates. Our defense was also very good again today.”
BYU heads back to Provo for its season home opener with Stetson on Wednesday, March 5 at Miller Park. The four-game series with the Hatters is scheduled for March 5-8. All four games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as well as BYU Radio.
Cougar men’s tennis gets home win, women’s tennis falls at Arizona State
BYU men’s tennis picked up its 10th win of the season against Air Force on Saturday, 5-2.
The Cougars had back-to-back matches this weekend, dropping the first match against No. 70 Denver on Friday evening and beating Air Force on Saturday afternoon. BYU is now 10-2 and has just one more match before Big 12 Conference play begins against LMU on Friday, March 7 at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in California.
Despite a close doubles contest and a near win against a top-ranked singles opponent, the Cougar women’s team suffered a 4-0 defeat against the Sun Devils in Phoenix on Saturday.
BYU seeks its first Big 12 win against Colorado and Texas Tech at home this weekend.
