BYU men's basketball coach Kevin Young celebrates a 96-95 victory at No. 19 Arizona at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz., on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025.There seems to be plenty of shots to go around in Kevin Young’s offense, so BYU intends to add as many good shooters as possible during the current college basketball transfer portal extravaganza.
On Thursday, Idaho sharpshooter Tyler Mrus announced his commitment to the Cougars on social media just after his official visit to Provo.
Mrus has good size (6-foot-7) and shot 38% from the 3-point line line last season for the Vandals. It appears he could fill a similar role as the departed Trevin Knell, a catch-and-shoot guy to compliment the slash-and-attack of Richie Saunders and incoming freshman A.J. Dybantsa.
Mrus’ basketball journey goes like this: He’s from Bothell, Wash., and played his high school ball at Seattle Prep. He played one season at the University of Alaska Anchorage (averaging 11 points per game) before transferring to the University of Idaho. He took a medical redshirt in 2023-24 and last season started all 31 games for the Vandals, averaging nearly 30 minutes per game. He averaged 9.7 points per game and shot 76% from the foul line. Of his 96 baskets, 73 were 3-pointers. He had five or more 3-pointers in a game five times and made six against UC San Diego. Against BYU on Nov. 16, Mrus led Idaho with 17 points.
As a redshirt junior, Mrus will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The addition of Mrus brings BYU’s transfer portal take to four players, including point guard Robert Wright III (Baylor), forward Dominique Diomande (Washington) and shooting guard Kennard Davis Jr. (Southern Illinois).
The Cougars are likely not done in the portal and are on the lookout for a point guard to back up Wright.
While player additions are dominating BYU news in the offseason, the Cougars are attempting to put together a challenging schedule as well. Young said he wished last year’s preseason slate had been a little more difficult. So far, BYU is rumored to have committed to an exhibition game against Nebraska, a game against Villanova on opening night, the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden, and an ESPN MTE (multi-team event) that includes Georgetown, Dayton and Miami.
